It's been a busy 10 years for SMD here in Karratha. Plenty of jobs, long days, challenges and a few good stories along the way!

After many years of putting in the hours, we’ve decided it’s time for a change of pace and more time for our family and life outside of work.

A big thankyou to our crew past and present, our clients, suppliers and everyone who’s supported us along the way. We have worked with some great people and couldn't have done what we have without you all.

The workshop might be wrapping up, but SMD isn’t. We’ll still be working across the Pilbara, just doing things a little differently, in a different location.

We will be here until the end of November so make sure, if you're in the LIA to stop by one last time!

Thanks again to everyone who’s been part of it!

Not your everyday engine changeout!

The boys recently completed an engine replacement in a remote location with limited access making the removal and installation a little more involved than usual.

With the engine tucked away in a tight space the job required some careful planning and a series of controlled lifts. Our team had to identify suitable lifting points and daisy-chain the engine through multiple confined areas including doorways and up through the steering room hatch.

From there a wharf crane was used to lift the old engine out and lower the replacement into position before working through the same process in reverse.

A challenging job with plenty of moving parts but a great example of the experience, teamwork and problem-solving that goes into marine mechanical work.

Another good effort from the SMD crew getting it done in a location where access was anything but straightforward.

When the job calls, we go where we’re needed.

The boys were over in Mackay last week supporting works onboard a vessel, another example of the capability and flexibility within the SMD team.

While Karratha is home our support isn’t limited to the Pilbara. Our team can mobilise to support marine and offshore operations across Australia, bringing practical trusted heavy marine mechanical and hydraulic capability directly to the job.

Last chance for our Exmouth trip - give us a call 📞

Not every maintenance job starts with a breakdown.

Oil samples can reveal contamination, internal wear and changes in equipment condition well before the problem becomes visible.

This sample has been collected and sent away for laboratory analysis, giving our team real information to work from when planning the next stage of maintenance.

It’s behind-the-scenes work, but it plays an important role in preventing unexpected failures and keeping critical equipment operating reliably.

Exmouth, we’re coming your way.

Our team will be heading to Exmouth and can assist with jet ski, Can-Am and marine/recreational equipment servicing, diagnostics, repairs and maintenance while we’re in town.

If your ski, Can-Am or equipment has been sitting around in the weather, now is a good time to get it checked over before the next trip out.

We can help with general servicing, fault finding, repairs and preventative maintenance to keep everything ready to go.

Get in touch with the team to plan ahead and arrange a spot while we’re in Exmouth.

The right tooling can be the difference between a controlled repair and extended downtime.

When a crane pin became seized onboard a fuel vessel, our team prepared the required hydraulic equipment and mobilised to the vessel by helicopter.

The pin was hydraulically pressed out onsite, allowing the repair to be completed before the crane was tested, commissioned and returned to service.

One of the larger rebuilds currently moving through our workshop.

This drill-rig mast has been stripped back for a complete assessment, with our mechanical and fabrication teams working through the repair and rebuild process together.

From identifying wear and repairing individual components through to reassembly and final checks every stage matters when the equipment is heading back into a demanding operating environment.

A great example of the depth of work being completed by our local team every day.

This repair would ordinarily have meant dry docking the vessel or sending it overseas for major works.

Our team mobilised offshore and found the anchor windlass seized onto the shaft, with a lack of lubrication resulting in damage to the bearing.

The complete unit was removed from the vessel, transferred ashore by crew boat and brought into our Karratha workshop. It was stripped, assessed and rebuilt, with replacement material hotshotted from Perth and the new bearing fabricated locally.

Five days later the windlass was back onboard, tested and commissioned.

A strong result made possible by our offshore crew, workshop team, suppliers and the vessel’s crew working together from start to finish.

Keeping vessels operational often comes down to how quickly issues can be identified and resolved.

When an offshore vessel experienced problems with its emergency generator, our team attended to diagnose the fault, identify the cause and carry out repairs onboard.

Following replacement and repair of the fuel pump system, the generator was recommissioned, tested and returned to operation, allowing the vessel to continue its schedule with minimal disruption.
