More than nine Australians die by su***de every day and over three-quarters of them are men.
Living in the Pilbara region we become very good at just getting on with it. The long hours, pressure and distance are part of living here but sometimes the people who look like they’re coping are anything but okay.
October is Mental Health Month. But for the people quietly struggling around us, mental health doesn’t begin and end with a date on the calendar.
That’s why together with Empowered Wellbeing Services we have started Pilbara Safe Conversations, a local initiative creating simple everyday opportunities for people to feel seen, supported and less alone.
We held our first one at Lo's cafe where Asset Protect covered coffees in the morning. We didn’t ask for anything in return. We just wanted to do something kind and give people a reason to stop for a second.
Each coffee came with a card that read: “Small conversations create big change.”
It costs nothing to check in with someone, say hello or tell them something kind. You never really know what another person is fighting.
I know personally that on some of my hardest days, even one small moment of light could have changed the way that day felt. It may not have fixed everything but it would have reminded me that the world wasn’t quite as heavy as it seemed.
That’s what I want these moments to give someone else.
Over the next 12 months we’ll be creating more of them across Karratha.
The coffee was never the point. The pause was. Be kind, you never know what battle someone is fighting 🩵
