Seawater's corrosive. That's not new information.

What matters is how much of your engine actually comes into contact with it.

Some older engines - and some still on the market today - run raw seawater straight through the engine block itself. More metal exposed, more time for corrosion to do its work.

These two show what that looks like over time. A heat exchanger core eaten by electrolysis from years of raw water contact. An exhaust elbow, rusted clean through.

It's why every engine we fit is heat exchanger cooled. Coolant does the work inside the engine. Seawater only ever touches the parts built to handle it - and even those need regular attention, as you've seen in this series.

Fewer parts exposed. Fewer surprises.

Every part of your seawater system sits in series - from the through-hull inlet right through to where it exits at the exhaust.

That means a restriction anywhere in the system chokes flow through the whole thing. Same idea as kinking a garden hose.

Over time, the tiny tubes inside the heat exchanger's tube bundle collect debris, chunks of failed impeller, and mineral scale from the seawater itself. Enough build-up and they block.

Less flow means less cooling. Less cooling means an overheating engine - and not much warning before it happens.

This is exactly what we're looking at here.
One half of this tube bundle running clean. The other still blocked.

Regular disassembly and an acid bath clean should be part of every service regime - not an afterthought.

Allura, a 60 feet of GRP composite cruising and sportfishing catamaran, repowered with twin NANNI N6.405s on a John Deere base.

Heavier, older engines out. More power, quieter running, and a noticeably smoother ride in - at every speed.

Swipe through the repower.

The numbers speak for themselves: for a 16-tonne, 60-foot cat, this is about as efficient as it gets.

Higher power. Better performance. An easier boat to run.

When you're on the water, getting into the habit of a daily check is one of the best things you can do.

First thing in the morning before getting underway is the perfect time.

A minor issue detected early can prevent a big problem or unexpected failure later.

Happy International Dog Day from the Marine Diesel team!

We're big fans of dog power around here - just as much as horsepower. Whether it's frozen water or liquid water, this pack have serious drive.

When you call us about a service, repower or parts - one of the first things we'll ask is your engine model and serial number.

On a NANNI engine, the ID plate is easy to find. It's located on the side of the engine block - model, serial number and build date all in one place.

Take a photo and save it somewhere handy.

Meet the N3.30 - a Kubota-based marine diesel that's trusted by some of the world's greatest offshore sailors.

Built on Kubota's latest engine block technology with NANNI's marinisation expertise. The E-TVCS combustion and full mechanical fuel injection system reduces emissions and improves fuel efficiency. Timing gears rather than a timing belt means significantly less maintenance time and cost.

SOLAS certified - the same safety standard applied to lifeboat engines. That tells you everything about the reliability bar this engine is built to.

As fitted to Whirlpool, a 42-foot sailing catamaran replacing older engines and saildrives. Quieter, smoother, and better performing.

✔️ Kubota base
✔️ 30hp at 3,600rpm
✔️ E-TVCS combustion and injection system
✔️ Timing gears - reduced maintenance
✔️ EU-RCD, US-EPA and BSO compliant

Talk to our team about whether the N3.30 is the right fit for your sailing vessel.
