New 33s look the part. Then you drive it, and the ute feels flat off the line, slow to pull and lazy up hills.

You're not imagining it.

A taller tyre does the same thing as a taller gear. Every turn of the wheel covers more ground, so the engine needs more torque to get moving and sits lower in the rev range than it was set up for. The extra weight of a bigger wheel and tyre makes it worse.

What you'll notice:

⚙️ Sluggish take-off, especially loaded or towing
⛰️ Autos hunting between gears on hills
🐢 More throttle needed to hold speed on the highway
📏 Speedo reading under your real speed

The fix depends on how far you've gone. For a big jump in tyre size, re-gearing the diffs is the mechanical answer. For most tyre upgrades, a custom Flash Diesel tune puts torque back low in the rev range, right where bigger tyres hurt most, so the ute drives the way it should again.

Hot days, a loaded van and a long climb. That's when a tow rig finds out what it's made of.

Most summer breakdowns we see aren't bad luck. They're small things that got missed before the trip. Here's what to check before you head off:

🌡️ Coolant: check the level and condition with the engine cold. If it's low, discoloured or a few years old, sort it now, not on the side of the highway.

🐞 Radiator and intercooler: bugs, grass seed and mud pack into the fins and choke airflow. A clogged core runs hotter, and a hot intercooler costs you power.

⚙️ Auto transmission: towing in the heat is the hardest work an auto does. Use tow/haul mode if you've got it, and drop a gear on long climbs rather than letting it hunt.

🛞 Tyres: set your pressures cold, before you leave, for the weight you're carrying. Check the van's tyres too, they're the ones that get forgotten.

🔋 Battery: heat kills batteries faster than cold. If yours is getting on, test it before the trip.

The Hilux 2.8 has been doing the hard yards since 2015, and the new-generation Hilux carries it straight over.

Here's something plenty of owners don't know: Toyota has already shown there's more in this engine. In 2020, the same 2.8 went from 130kW and 450Nm to 150kW and 500Nm with a factory update.

And the manual? Same engine, but held to 420Nm. That's 80Nm less than the auto.

A Flash Diesel tune builds on what the 2.8 already has. More midrange torque where you tow and overtake, a stronger pull up hills with a load on, and less hunting around for the right gear.

Flash Diesel started in 2012. Here's what the ute world looked like back then.

The PX Ranger Wildtrak was the one everyone wanted. A 3.2 five-cylinder making 147kW and 470Nm, and plenty of people reckoned that was as good as it got.

In 2026, the Wildtrak's 3.0 V6 makes 184kW and 600Nm straight out of the factory. Same badge, 130Nm more torque before anyone's touched it.

What hasn't changed? Factory tunes still leave something on the table. A V6 Ranger through our dealer network picked up 22.6kW and 94Nm at the wheels on a Stage 1 tune.

Big weekend on the dirt? Your air filter noticed, even if you didn't.

Fine dust is hard on a diesel's intake. A filter packed with red dust restricts airflow, so the engine has to work harder for the same air. You can feel it as flatter power, worse economy, and a turbo working harder to make up the difference.

It's also one of the cheapest things on the ute to fix.

After a dusty run, pull the filter out and look at it. If it's caked, or you can't see light through it, replace it. If you're regularly on dirt roads or corrugations, check your handbook for the dusty-conditions service schedule. It's shorter than the standard one.

A tune is built around a healthy intake. Keep the air clean and the calibration can do its job.

152 kW to 175 kW at the wheels. 543 Nm to 638 Nm. Ford Ranger 3.0L V6 diesel on a Stage 1 Flash Diesel tune.

That's +15% power and +17% torque from a remap — baseline and tuned runs on the same Mainline chassis dyno, and the tuned curve sits above stock right across the run, not just at the peak.

The extra torque shows up where you actually use it: cruising, overtaking and towing.

An hour and a half north of Brendale, Toolara State Forest opens up into fire trails and pine plantation tracks that make for an easy half-day loop without committing to a full overnighter.

Check your tyre pressures before the forestry roads get loose, and keep an eye on fuel — servos are sparse once you're off the highway around Gunalda.

Good spot for a low-key test of the tune without the crowds you'll find further north.

A bigger turbo doesn't automatically mean a better one. Go too big for the engine and you've traded low-end response for a number on a spec sheet.

Turbo lag is the delay between putting your foot down and boost actually arriving — driven by how much exhaust flow it takes to spin the turbine up to speed. A larger turbo needs more flow to get there, so if the tune isn't built around it, you get a flat spot low down before it finally comes on boost.

The tune is what actually controls spool. Fuel delivery, boost targets and timing are what decide whether a turbo comes on smoothly or hits like a switch further up the rev range. Right hardware with the wrong tune — or the reverse — both end up feeling worse than a smaller turbo tuned properly.

If your ute feels laggy off the line, it's not always a hardware problem. Get it looked at before you start throwing bigger parts at it.

A diesel remap isn't one-size-fits-all. What goes into your tune depends on what the vehicle actually needs to do — and that's not the same for every owner.

Chasing economy for long-distance work or a daily commute calls for a different fuel and boost curve to a rig that's towing a van every weekend, and that's different again to someone who just wants the most power the hardware can safely handle.

None of that is a fixed "package" off a shelf, it's a conversation before the vehicle goes on the dyno about what you actually want out of it, then a tune built around that answer.

Economy, towing, daily driveability, outright power — tell us the priority and we'll tune to it.
