Vehicle modifications can help make driving more accessible for people who need an alternative to conventional steering, braking and acceleration controls. 🚗

This setup features a two-way joystick for braking and acceleration, paired with a mini-wheel electronic steering system. The joystick allows the driver to control speed and braking through a single control, while the mini-wheel provides an alternative way to steer the vehicle.

These modifications may support people who have limited strength, mobility or range of movement in their arms or legs, helping them operate vehicle controls in a way that better suits their abilities.

Every setup is individualised to the driver's needs, abilities and goals, with safety and functional independence at the centre of the assessment process.

What a fantastic night at the 2026 Australian Allied Health Awards! ✨

I couldn't be prouder of Jenny Gribbin, who took out Occupational Therapist of the Year! 🏆

Jenny and I co-hosted the Drive_able podcast ( Drive-ABLE Podcast), and I'm fortunate to call her a great friend. She's an incredible OT, a passionate advocate for our profession and, most importantly, a genuinely wonderful person. So well deserved, Jenny!

It was also fantastic to see occupational therapists so strongly represented throughout the night, including taking home team and group awards. What a great reflection of the incredible work being done across our profession.

A special shout-out to Megan Tan from One Rehabilitation, who won the Innovative Service Delivery Award! Megan was my senior OT when I first started my career, so seeing her recognised all these years later was pretty special. Always great to see a fellow South Aussie taking home an award!

And finally, a huge thank you to Sarena and her entire team at Allied Health Awards for putting on such a wonderful event. Bringing the allied health community together to recognise, celebrate and inspire each other is something worth celebrating in itself. Well done also to Nicole Nott

Getting the right vehicle setup can make a big difference to how someone accesses and uses their car. 🚗

For this client, our OT team supported a range of vehicle modifications tailored to their individual needs, including:

• Fadiel Easy Drive hand controls for an alternative way to operate the vehicle
• RB System Joy Spinner to support steering
• Footrest platform for added positioning and support
• Personalised cushion to improve comfort and seating

Every vehicle modification is considered around the person, their goals, and how they need to use their vehicle in everyday life.

For many people, driving is about much more than getting from A to B.

It can mean independence, connection, choice and being able to take part in the everyday roles and activities that matter most.

After illness, injury or a change in health, returning to driving can bring questions about safety, confidence and what the next step should be.

Our Occupational Therapists work with people to understand how their health, abilities and individual circumstances may affect driving, while also considering what driving means in their everyday life.

The goal is not simply to get someone back behind the wheel.

It is to help identify a safe and appropriate pathway forward, whether that involves returning to driving, developing skills, exploring vehicle modifications or considering other ways to maintain mobility and participation.

For participants, families and referrers, this can provide greater clarity, confidence and direction at a time when the next step may feel uncertain.
