Back on the Road with the Right Modifications

For this client with a lower limb amputation, we fitted Fadiel Easy Drive hand controls and a standard spinner k**b to support safe and independent driving.

After completing the assessment and modification process with Williams OT, they now have a modified vehicle and their licence reinstated, and ready to get back behind the wheel!

"What actually happens during a driving assessment?"

Every assessment is individual, but generally involves learning about your driving history, understanding your goals, assessing functional abilities and, where appropriate, completing an on-road assessment.

The aim is to provide recommendations that support safe driving and participation in the community.

A lot of the work we do at Williams OT never appears in an appointment calendar.
It happens in meetings.
In submissions.
In conversations with government.
At industry forums.
In presentations.
In discussions with other occupational therapists and organisations about how we can make systems work better for people with disability.

Why do we put time into it?
Because sometimes helping one person means completing a great assessment.
And sometimes helping thousands of people means contributing to a better pathway.

Over the past year our team has continued to contribute to conversations around driving, disability, mobility and access, while still doing the clinical work our clients rely on every day.

We think both are important.
Better outcomes don't only happen in the clinic.
Sometimes they start behind the scenes.

Poorly matched equipment can lead to access problems, non-use, discomfort, unsafe transfers, carer strain, or the need to start again.

Assistive Technology should match the person, their environment, their support needs and their goals.
