WOMAN CRUSH WEDNESDAY | HELEN CLIFFORD
The iconic red double-decker bus has long been the heartbeat of London but behind its reliability was a woman bold enough to step where few had before.
In 1983, at just 18 years old, Helen Clifford became London Transport’s first female bus mechanic, qualifying at West Ham Garage. At a time when engineering floors were firmly male dominated, Helen didn’t ask for permission she earned her place through skill, discipline, and determination.
She was not only a mechanic but also a qualified bus driver, a role opened to women less than a decade earlier. Her journey wasn’t about trends or applause it was about proving that competence has no gender.
Helen’s legacy lives on in every woman who picks up a spanner, steps into a workshop, studies automotive engineering, or dreams of a career in this industry. She showed us that barriers are not permanent — they are meant to be challenged.
