This photo was taken during my time as a mechanic at Car Service City, Honeydew, Johannesburg. Ignore the military vehicle in the background—it was one of those projects that didn’t go as planned. That garage is where I truly became a fully competent mechanic.

I worked under a strict boss who did not tolerate mistakes, and that environment shaped me professionally. It taught me to be thorough in my inspections and precise in my diagnostics. If you misdiagnosed a fault and ordered the wrong spare parts, you took them home and paid for them yourself. Because of that discipline, I am forever grateful to Mr Johan.

I was also fortunate to work alongside a good friend and fellow mechanic, Callisto. To this day, he remains a close friend, even though we haven’t seen each other in about eight years.

There's a debate about whether formal education is necessary to become a skilled mechanic or if mentorship from an experienced professional is sufficient. Modern vehicles, particularly those with hybrid systems, incorporate complex technologies that require a thorough understanding. Formal education is essential for working on these vehicles to prevent damaging expensive components or risking safety, such as when changing a xenon bulb, which operates at around 20,000 volts. Pursuing formal education and continually updating one’s knowledge is crucial. I will outline three pathways to becoming a qualified mechanic: apprenticeship, direct enrollment in a polytechnic or vocational institution, and certification through trade exams.
