Tips Tuesday at Auto Magic Limited
To protect car paint from sun damage, the goal is to reduce UV exposure, heat buildup, oxidation, and clear-coat fading.
1. Wash the car regularly
Dust, bird droppings, tree sap, and road grime bake into the paint faster under the sun. Wash at least once a week or every two weeks using proper car shampoo, not dishwashing liquid.
2. Use wax or paint sealant
Wax creates a protective layer against UV rays. For better long-lasting protection, use a synthetic paint sealant. Wax may last 1โ2 months, while sealants can last longer.
3. Consider ceramic coating
If the car is valuable or exposed to the sun daily, ceramic coating is a stronger option. It helps protect against UV rays, water spots, fading, and makes washing easier.
4. Park under shade whenever possible
Shade is one of the simplest protections. Park under a carport, tree shade, garage, or use covered parking. Just avoid trees that drop sap or bird droppings.
5. Use a car cover
A good breathable car cover helps if the car sits outside for long periods. Avoid cheap covers that trap heat or scratch the paint when blown by wind.
6. Dry the car properly after washing
Water droplets act like tiny lenses under strong sunlight and can leave water spots. Use a clean microfiber towel to dry the car.
7. Avoid washing in direct sunlight
Wash early morning or late afternoon. Soap and water dry too quickly in the sun, leaving marks and stains.
8. Polish faded paint carefully
If the paint already looks dull or chalky, polishing can restore gloss by removing oxidation. But polishing removes a tiny layer of clear coat, so donโt overdo it.
9. Protect plastic trims too
The sun also fades black trims, rubber seals, and headlights. Use a UV trim protectant and headlight protectant where needed.
10. Deal with bird droppings quickly
Bird droppings are acidic and become worse when heated by the sun. Wipe them off as soon as possible with water or quick detailer spray.
For a simple routine: wash weekly, wax monthly, park in shade, and remove droppings/sap immediately
