ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND THE BEHAVIOUR OF MOTORISTS
I have been driving for a good number of years. I have taken short trips and long journeys as well. What is shocking is the behaviour of a few motorists on our roads. Motorists are the most immature adults one can ever find on our roads, each one believing they are driving the fastest and most reliable vehicle out there. Some motorists actually would not allow another motorist to overtake them, and the moment they notice another vehicle is trying to overtake, they begin to accelerate. Who does that? You have your own programme, your own budget, and you understand the fitness and condition of your vehicle; so why should you change the speed at which you have been driving, just because you do not want the other vehicle to overtake your vehicle?
Fatal accidents have occurred because of motorists who do not take personal responsibility on the road. And most of them in this category have been head-on collisions; because the motorist who was overtaking ran out of time and space to get back to their driving lane as a result of the other motorist accelerating instead of reducing their speed.
We can all help to avoid these accidents that are killing our people in great numbers. Everyone out there is a great person to someone, a bread-winner, a productive employee, a customer and potential customer to some business. All of us are involved in economic activities in one way or the other, in order to provide for our families and in the development of our beloved country. Let us not participate in lessening the chances and opportunities for children and dependents not to get an education because their bread-winner was killed in a road traffic accident. As motorists, we have a duty to each another and to all road users. We must do everything possible within our means to avoid road traffic accidents. “With great power, comes great responsibility”.
