Automobile Association (AA) CEO Bobby Ramagwede has warned consumers about some serious safety concerns with Chinese vehicles available on the South African market, adding that the most alarming thing he noted on a recent trip to China is “the corner cutting in the quality of the vehicles”.
Ramagwede said it is very concerning that, at their respective shows, Chinese manufacturers had displays showing the grade of metal from a strength perspective that is used on which parts of the vehicle.
He claimed the tensile strength of the metal used for key structural parts of vehicles, including the pillars and, to a certain extent, the door struts, “rang an alarm bell”.
Ramagwede said South Africa needs far stricter safety standards, and that this is “another classic case of the auto industry not being protected” by the government.
