Sodium-ion batteries are being talked about as the technology that will take over from lithium-ion. That's not quite right, so let's look at the facts.

Lithium-ion batteries pack more energy into less weight than sodium-ion ever will. This is why lithium stays in electric cars built for long range, in performance vehicles, and in aircraft, where every kilogram counts. No engineering breakthrough changes that basic chemistry.

Sodium-ion earns its place elsewhere. It is cheaper to produce and safer, since it does not carry lithium's risk of overheating and catching fire under stress. This makes it the sensible choice for large, stationary battery storage next to wind and solar farms, where weight is irrelevant and safety is critical.

Changan, a large Chinese manufacturer, has fitted a sodium-ion battery into a production car, the Nevo A06, now in dealerships in China. Its sodium-ion version covers around 400km, compared with 510km to 630km for the lithium-ion versions of the same car. Electric farm machinery is likely next, since weight limits do not apply there either.

There is a second point worth understanding. Sodium is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, found in oceans and salt deposits everywhere. Because of this, people assume the supply chain around sodium batteries will automatically be spread out and free from any one country's control.

Abundant raw sodium is not the problem. The true value sits in the chemical processing and manufacturing needed to build battery cells at scale, and that capability takes serious capital, technical know-how, and accumulated experience to build, not simply time. Whoever controls that processing and manufacturing holds a real advantage, but that advantage only holds if it can be plugged into a secure, sustainable route to market, regardless of where the raw sodium came from.

The real question in sodium-ion is which countries and companies end up controlling both the manufacturing and a secure route to market for it.

What's Wrong With My Battery?

My car starts... but then stalls when it's idling. What could be causing it?

If your engine starts without a problem but then dies while you're sitting at a traffic light or idling, don't assume the battery is automatically to blame. The same symptom can be caused by a weak battery, a failing alternator, poor battery connections, charging system faults or even engine-related problems.

A weak battery may no longer supply stable voltage, while a failing alternator may not be producing enough power to keep the battery charged and your vehicle's electrical systems operating correctly. Modern vehicles rely on a consistent electrical supply, even when idling.

The only way to know what's really causing the problem is to test the system properly rather than replacing parts based on guesswork.

At Battery Corp, every branch is independently owned by battery veterans who've spent years working in the industry. They understand how batteries, alternators and charging systems work together, and they know the value of finding the real cause before recommending a replacement.

Bring your vehicle into your nearest Battery Corp branch for a complimentary battery and charging system test. We'll identify what's going on and help you get back on the road with confidence.

Myth: battery failure is sudden and unpredictable.

False – most failures build up over time and show measurable warning signs.

Be on the lookout for slow engine cranking, where the starter turns over more sluggishly than usual, especially on cold starts.

Watch for voltage drop symptoms such as dimming dashboard lights or a noticeable dip in electrical performance when accessories are switched on (aircon, infotainment, headlights).

Poor recovery after charging is another key indicator — the vehicle starts after a jump or charge, but struggles again after being parked for a short period.

Flickering or inconsistent lighting can also indicate instability in the electrical supply, particularly at idle or under load.

These signs point to a battery losing capacity or struggling to hold charge, often long before complete failure.

With proper testing, these patterns can be confirmed through load testing, voltage checks, and charging system analysis to determine whether the issue sits in the battery or elsewhere in the system.

At Battery Corp, each branch is owned and run by veterans in the battery industry who will be able to guide you through the right diagnosis of issue in your car. Bring your car in for complimentary testing.

ASK BILL | What effect do short trips have on your battery?
It seems counterintuitive, but frequent short trips can reduce the life of your battery.

Every time you start your vehicle, the battery delivers a large burst of power to crank the engine. Once the engine is running, the alternator begins replacing that energy. The problem is that on short journeys, the engine often isn't running long enough to fully recharge the battery before you switch it off again.

Repeat that cycle day after day, and your battery can spend much of its life in a partially discharged state. Over time, that accelerates wear, reduces performance and increases the risk of being left with a vehicle that won't start.

Modern vehicles also place greater demands on batteries than ever before. Stop-start systems, infotainment, climate control, cameras and onboard electronics all rely on a battery that is in good condition and properly charged.

If your driving mostly consists of school runs, shopping trips or short commutes, don't wait until your battery lets you down.

Every BatteryCorp branch is independently owned by a veteran of the battery industry who understands batteries, charging systems and the faults that are often mistaken for battery failure. Whether you have a question, need expert advice or simply want peace of mind, stop by any of our branches nationwide for a complimentary battery test.

Not every battery problem is actually a battery problem.

Modern vehicles rely on increasingly complex electrical systems, and symptoms such as difficult starting, warning lights, intermittent faults or a flat battery can sometimes be caused by something else entirely.

A weak battery may be the culprit. But it could also be a charging system issue, a faulty alternator, a parasitic draw, poor connections, or an electrical component that isn't switching off when it should.

That's why guessing can become expensive.

Bring your vehicle into any BatteryCorp branch nationwide for a complimentary battery test. Our team will assess the condition of your battery and help identify whether the battery itself is the issue or whether something else may be affecting your vehicle's electrical system.

A proper diagnosis can save time, money and unnecessary battery replacements.

Before you replace a battery, make sure you know what's really causing the problem.
