I’m reviewing the new Citroën Basalt in South Africa.

This is not your usual compact SUV. The Basalt brings coupe-SUV styling, a raised driving position, a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine, a 6-speed automatic gearbox and pricing from R354,900.

I’m reviewing the Changan Hunter, one of the newest double cab bakkies in South Africa.

With pricing from R449,900, the Hunter enters the market as a more affordable option in a segment where prices have climbed very quickly.

The diesel model uses a 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine with 110 kW and 350 Nm, and the range includes both 2WD manual and 4WD automatic options.

But is the Changan Hunter proper bakkie value, or would you rather stick with something more established like a Hilux, Ranger or D-MAX?
