The first generation of Subaru’s Forester model, launched in 1997, was built on the platform of the Impreza from the same year. This continued into the second generation of the Forester which came in 2002.

Because these generations were based on an Impreza, their off-road capabilities were considered exceptional while at the same time being quite fast. The second generation became even faster, thanks to weight saving measures such as an aluminium bonnett, perforated rails and a hydro-formed sub-frame.
