How to Read Your Dashboard Warning Lights

Not every warning light means the same thing. Here's how to tell the difference.

Dashboard warning lights aren't all created equal, but most drivers treat them the same way — either ignore them completely or panic about all of them equally. Neither is right.
Red lights mean stop soon, or stop now. Oil pressure, engine temperature, and brake warning lights are red for a reason — these indicate something that can cause real damage if you keep driving. Pull over safely and get it checked as soon as you reasonably can.

Orange or yellow lights mean get it checked, but you can usually keep driving carefully. Engine management lights, ABS lights, and tyre pressure warnings fall into this category. Not an emergency, but not something to ignore for months either.

Green or blue lights are just information. Indicators, headlights, cruise control — these are just telling you a function is active, not warning you of a problem.

The golden rule: if you don't know what a light means, it takes thirty seconds to check your owner's manual or send us a photo on WhatsApp. We'll tell you straight whether it's urgent or not.

Most workshops quote first and check later. We do it the other way round.

It sounds like a small difference, but it changes everything about how a repair gets priced. Quoting first means guessing — estimating what might be wrong based on the symptom you describe, then padding the number to cover whatever's actually found once the vehicle's up on the hoist.

We check first. Every job starts with a proper inspection — not a glance, a proper strip-down where it's needed — before a single rand gets quoted. That means the number you're given is the number for what's actually wrong, not what might be wrong.

It also means we sometimes find less than expected. A part that sounded serious turns out to be a R50 fix. A noise that sounded expensive turns out to be nothing at all. We'd rather tell you that than pad a quote to match what you were bracing for.

Starting your car and driving off immediately can increase engine wear.

Every vehicle has a “cold start” — whether it’s winter or not. When your engine starts cold, the oil hasn’t fully circulated through the engine yet.

That first 30 seconds matters.

If you drive off hard immediately after starting:
⚠ Oil hasn’t fully lubricated critical engine components
⚠ Metal parts are still cold and tight
⚠ Internal engine wear increases over time
⚠ Turbocharged engines are especially vulnerable

The best thing you can do?
✔ Start the car
