Hi-jackings in South

Although the Free State has one of South Africa’s lowest hijacking rates, Bloemfontein has emerged as a hotspot for the theft of new, high-end SUVs, according to the Insurance Crime Bureau (ICB).

SAPS recorded 3,609 hi-jackings nationally between January and March 2026, averaging 40 per day. This was a 20.% decrease from the same period in 2025. Gauteng accounted for 57% of all hijackings, while the Free State recorded just 32.

Despite the low overall hijacking rate, the ICB says organised criminals are increasingly targeting high-end SUVs in Bloemfontein using relay attacks.

Relay attacks exploit keyless-entry systems by capturing and amplifying the signal from a vehicle's key fob. This allows criminals to unlock, start and drive away with the vehicle without having the physical key.

Protecting against relay attacks
Owners of keyless vehicles should consider:
• Disabling keyless/proximity entry when it is not needed.
• Keeping keys in a Faraday pouch or signal-blocking container.
• Avoiding storing keys near doors, windows or external walls.
• Being alert to people behaving suspiciously or following them when leaving shopping centres, offices or restaurants.
• Reporting suspicious activity or vehicle theft immediately.

The ICB warns that while relay attacks are not new, their apparent increase against new-model, high-end SUVs highlights the need for greater awareness and preventative measures.
