Why is littering a road-safety issue?

Because rubbish on our roads is not just unsightly; it can also be dangerous.

It can cause crashes. Drivers who swerve to avoid rubbish can lose control or collide with other vehicles. Even small objects can become dangerous projectiles when struck by a vehicle.

It can increase stopping distances. Debris can damage tyres, interfere with a vehicle’s handling or force drivers to brake suddenly, increasing the risk of a collision.

It can contribute to flooding and aquaplaning. Rubbish that blocks stormwater drains can cause water to accumulate on roads, increasing the risk of vehicles losing traction and control.

It can even cause vehicle fires. One of our clients once drove over a Kentucky Fried Chicken box. The box was sucked up into the engine bay, came into contact with the hot exhaust manifold and caught fire.

So, the next time you throw rubbish out of your car, remember that you are not just making a mess. You could be creating a hazard that puts other people's lives at risk.

Littering is not just an environmental issue. It is an issue of personal responsibility, respect for others and road safety.

Put your rubbish in a bin. It really isn't that difficult.
