The Mamba 4×2 APC is part of South Africa’s long history of developing mine-protected armoured vehicles. Developed in the late 1980s in response to a South African Army requirement for a versatile vehicle suited to border protection and internal security duties, the original Mamba Mk1 was based on a commercially available Toyota Dyna 4×2 chassis.
Its design incorporated a mine-resistant armoured hull intended to protect its occupants from landmine blasts and small-arms fire while remaining relatively simple to operate and maintain.
The first vehicles entered service in the early 1990s, with more than 500 of the original 4×2 Mambas reportedly produced before later versions evolved into the better-known 4×4 Mamba family. The design ultimately became another important step in South Africa’s development of specialised mine-protected vehicles
