Step-by-Step Testing Procedure
Prepare the Multimeter: Power on your digital multimeter and twist the selection dial to the lowest
**DC Voltage** setting. On most standard tools, this is denoted as **2V** or **20V**.
1.Establish an Absolute Ground: Connect the black (negative) test probe directly to an unpainted
metal surface on the vehicle's chassis, or clamp it safely onto the negative (-) terminal of your car's
battery. A clean ground is crucial for an accurate reading.
2.Access the Fluid: Clean the exterior cap of the brake master cylinder reservoir thoroughly before
removing it to prevent dirt particles from falling inside. Pop open the cap.
3.Submerge the Positive Probe: Submerge only the metallic tip of the red (positive) test probe directly
into the brake fluid.
Note: Keep the probe completely suspended in the liquid; do not allow it to scrape or touch the metal walls or bottom
of the master cylinder container.
4.Analyze the Display: Observe the steady reading produced on your digital display.
Interpreting Your Results
The voltage level indicates the structural and chemical breakdown of the fluid. Use the benchmark
reference table below to see where your vehicle stands:
Voltage Reading Fluid Status Required Action
0.0V – 0.2V Excellent No action required. Your brake fluid is clean and free of moisture.
0.3V Borderline The fluid is beginning to degrade. Plan a fluid flush in the near future.
0.4V or Higher Critical Fail High water absorption and line corrosion present. Flush immediately.
Safety Reminder
Brake fluid is highly corrosive to automotive paint surfaces. Always keep a clean microfiber towel
nearby, and immediately wipe down any accidental drips from your vehicle's bodywork.
