The BYD Dolphin Surf might just be one of the most important cars on sale in South Africa right now.

Starting from around R339,000, this compact EV is designed to make electric motoring more accessible than ever before. During our review, we tested everything from public charging at Mall of Africa to home charging, real-world range, practicality, and day-to-day usability.

Highlights:
• One of South Africa’s most affordable EVs
• BYD Blade Battery technology
• Surprisingly spacious interior for its size
• Fun hidden details and quirky design touches
• Home charging costs that can be significantly lower than public charging
• Packed with technology for the price

One of the things that stood out most was just how quirky this little car is. From the playful design elements to features people don’t even realise are there, the Dolphin Surf has far more personality than you’d expect from a budget-focused EV.

But the big question is:

Would you switch to an EV if it could save you money every month, or are petrol cars still the better option for South Africa?

“Art in Motion” that’s what Omoda calls this car.
And this… is the Omoda C7, priced at R598,000.

We didn’t just drive it for a day.
We lived with it.

Over the festive season, after just under 1,600 km of real-world driving, this is what stood out 👇

What I loved:
• Bold, futuristic design with serious road presence
• Premium-feeling interior with a massive 15.9-inch screen
• Heated & cooled seats — a luxury I didn’t know I needed
• Panoramic sunroof that makes every drive feel special
• Comfortable on long trips, especially with family
• Tech-packed for the price it’s hard to ignore the value

What I didn’t love:
• Fuel consumption isn’t its strongest point
• Tech can lag sometimes, especially with connectivity

Guess what just happened? VW threw itself a 50th birthday bash but not with cake and candles. We’re talking burnouts, epic drifts, and rally legends making the Polo look cooler than ever. And yes every jaw-dropping second was shot right here in Kariega, Gqeberha, at VW’s South African plant and nearby streets.

Motorsport superstar tore through the harbour, a closed city highway, the Volkswagen test track, and the factory floor piloting not only the rally born Polo R WRC and the wild Harlekin-liveried Polo R Supercar, but also the electric Polo RX1e. The BYD Shark’s 220V plug point is not just a gimmick, we put it straight to work at LAN WORX Lotus Gardens, Jalapeng. This is a proper neighborhood car wash spot and this time we brought our own pressure washer… powered entirely by the Shark’s onboard power system.

With up to 2.2kW of power on tap, you can plug in almost anything from a washer to a vacuum cleaner, even sound gear. We gave the Shark a foam bath, vacuumed it up, and yes… we flexed the factory subwoofer while we were at it.

BYD reckons you can run kit like this for up to 12 hours without worrying about draining your drive battery. That’s some serious parking power.

Big respect to LAN WORX always keeping it clean.

Just wrapped a scenic blast through the Jaecoo Glacier and then a cheeky in-and-out trip to Durban — that’s about 1 200 km round trip — and the Jaecoo J7 soaked it up like a true grand tourer. Smooth, comfortable, and way more refined than you’d expect.

Now here’s the funny bit: this SUV gives major Evoque vibes — and that’s not by accident. Jaguar Land Rover once tried setting up a plant in China, the deal collapsed… and suddenly a very Evoque-like SUV called the J7 showed up. Coincidence? We think not 😏
