Here’s a look at some of the before & after photos of our SP restoration — and this one is particularly close to our hearts.
Anyone who knows us well knows that we have a serious love for VW Beetles. So when this old girl arrived at The Buggy Guy in June 2025, we were genuinely excited — and incredibly proud — to have been trusted with the job of bringing her back to life.
And yes… we know many of you will ask:
"Why did it take so long?” 😂
As the saying goes… good things take time.
We could have rushed her & taken shortcuts. But that’s not how we want to do things. We take our time because we care.
We spend the hours sourcing the right parts, restoring what can be saved, finding period-correct components & making sure that every little detail is given the attention it deserves.
This SP was personally assembled and loved by Reinhard — The Buggy Guy himself.❤️
Countless hours went into this build.
The shell received a complete respray, & we started fresh with a brand-new headliner, rubberised flooring, a fully reconditioned engine with the original-style dual-carburettor setup, brand-new brakes, new suspension components, new window beadings, running boards, rain catcher, firewall and so much more.
Days were spent carefully reconnecting the electrical system, combining new components where necessary while keeping the car as original and period-correct as possible.
And yes… we sacrificed our old Lady Bug for this build. 💔
But sometimes, one project gives another the chance to survive. And that’s exactly what happened here.
We had the privilege of helping preserve a rare piece of South African Volkswagen history.
The South African SP Beetle was produced exclusively from 1976 to mid-1978, with only 3,096 units built.
This particular car is an original surviving 1977 114Z model, finished in silver Cloud Metallic.
For us, this restoration isn't simply about making an old car look new. It’s about preserving the little details that made these cars special & respecting the people who built them, the people who owned them before us, & the stories they carry.
And most importantly, it’s about making sure that the next generation gets the opportunity to experience the magic of these classics.
We are incredibly grateful to our customers for trusting us with such a special piece of history.

We know we don't always work at the fastest expected pace…But we put our hearts into what we do.
Every build teaches us something new.

And every true classic that leaves our workshop reminds us why we started doing this in the first place.
Because for us, it isn't just a job.
It's a passion, to keep the classics alive for tomorrow's memories.
