Electric Power!
Having forayed into the world of alternatively powered vehicles with the i sub-brand, BMW is now turning its attention to extending its increasing knowledge by providing hybrid power in its core models. The new technology to be showcased is a new plug-in hybrid system in the X5 prototype .

Using the now-familiar transmission naming system, but in a way, BMW's eDrive will combine its latest TwinPower combustion engines with in-house built battery cells and electric motors. This creates a hybrid system that BMW claims can not only return real-world energy savings, but still offer the expected BMW driving experience. Engineers were keen to stress that this remains an ongoing development programme so the prototype did not fully reflect what a finished series production model could look like, yet would give an accurate enough indication.

Although being current development vehicles, externally there is little to differentiate the eDrive version from the conventionally-powered X5. The additional flap on the left wing for the plug-in charging socket is the biggest giveaway.

Lift the bonnet and you are greeted by a rather empty looking engine bay as the TwinPower four-cylinder petrol unit sits low and is recessed right behind the right axle line thanks to compact size.
At the other end, hidden under the boot floor, is the eDrive electric motor and high- voltage battery. This consists of Samsung battery cells brought in, but the finished product is assembled in-house. The result is a compact and efficient unit that is capable of enabling the X5 to drive at least 20 miles solely on electric power - a distance that bMW claims is the average commute of 80% of X5 drivers.

The overall size of the battery and electric motor seams to be compact, and when engineers were asked about the ease with which it could be fitted into other models - such as the 5-series and X3 - the answer was just an enthusiastic grin...
