How the tyre size might appear.

Disecting the code

The tyre size might read like this: P195/55 R16 87 V. Hardly user friendly but, when you know what it all means, you’ll realise it tells you useful information about the tyre’s construction, size and type.

1 Cross section width

The first three numbers, in this case 195, refer to the section width of the tyre. This is the measurement, in millimetres, from the tyre’s inner sidewall to its outer sidewall.

2 Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio, or profile, refers to the height of the sidewall as a % of the section width. In our example, 55 means the height is equal to 55% of the 195mm width. The bigger the aspect ratio, the bigger the sidewall will be.

3 Construction type

The letter R means the tyre is a radial construction. Almost all new car tyres are radials.

4 Rim

The number to the right of the construction type is the rim diameter, measured in inches. In this case, it’s a 16” wheel.

5 Load index

The final number is the load index i.e. the maximum load (in kg) that the tyre can carry. See chart below

While you may know it is important to replace your car tyres regularly and perform regular tyre maintenance, there may be a few things you didn't know about these rubber items.

Here are 8 of the most unusual tyre facts.

1. Tyres can age

Although checking your tyres regularly is the best way to determine whether your car tyre pressure is what it should be and that your tread is within the legal limit, you should also pay some attention to the age of your tyres.

Heat, ozone and sunlight can all cause the rubber in your tyres to deteriorate and this can lead to tyre failure. Don't forget to also check the spare tyre for signs of damage. If you are not sure whether your tyres fit the standard, make sure you consult an expert for some reputable advice.

2. Some tyre development comes from motor racing

While Formula 1 racers use their car tyres in a different manner to your average Joe or Jane, it is interesting to note that some developments in the industry have influenced changes in the safety of everyday car tyres, according to Business Car Manager.

3. Valve maintenance is essential

The manufacturers of Bridgestone tyres advise that valve maintenance is an important part of looking after your tyres.

In fact, these valves are able to help maintain pressure in the tyre and should be replaced when new tyres are fitted.

Valve caps are used to protect the valve from grit, water and dust and it is important that these form a seal over the valves.

4. There are advantages of using the same brand of tyres

While it is not uncommon to see cars that have a mix of car tyre brands, the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ) recommends using the same brand as this can ensure your car will handle better, particularly in wet conditions.

5. Your tyre requirements change based on the season

You may not realise that there are real reasons to consider getting tyres specially designed for the winter or summer months.

However, if you drive in the snow or wet, there are real reasons to consider making the switch. According to the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers association, winter tyres can reduce your braking distance by up to 20 per cent.

6. Car tyres are naturally white

Since the natural colour of rubber is white, you may not realise why car tyres are black. The colour change isn't purely aesthetic though, but the byproduct of adding carbon to the rubber.

This was later replaced by silica for many tyres, Steve Howat, Continental tyres general manager explained on the manufacturer's Website. This material can help to improve grip in the wet. However, the colour has remained black. This has added advantages, such as being able to withstand a bit of dirt and also being able to complement any kind of colour car.

7. Where did the word tyre come from?

Also spelt tire in the USA, it is believed this word can trace its origins back to the 15th century. It may be a shortened form of attire, as the tyre was considered the 'clothing' of the wheel itself.

8. Old tyres are often recycled to make new roads

Crumbing is a technique used to turn old tyres into fine powder, granules or larger rubber particles.

These are then used Down Under to create roads. In fact, around 1,000 tonnes of this material is used to construct new roads in Australia each year, the Department of the Environment revealed.

The benefits of this road material is that it costs less and is easier to transport than crushed rock and can increase emissions if used to resurface roads. Not only that but it can also extend the life of roads, so they don't need to be replaced so often.

When you purchase a new set of tyres, it pays to think about where your old set will go.

1. Tyre Sidewall Markings

The letters and numbers on your tyre tell you: how high wide the tyre is (Width), how high the tyre wall is (Profile), how fast they can go (Speed rating), what weight they can carry (Load index) and the diameter of the inside rim (Wheel size).

2. Tyre Labelling

Since 2012 all tyres must be labelled with their relative: Fuel Consumption, Wet Grip and Noise Levels.

3. Tread Depth

It is very important to regularly check your tyre tread depth. It is a legal requirement that tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread. Anything below this then they need replacing as soon as possible. A useful way to test this is by conducting the 20p test. Insert a 20p into the tread, if you can see the band around the outside, then your tyre needs changing.

4. Tyre Pressure

It is vital that you know the correct tyre pressure of your vehicle. Ensure that you check your vehicle handbook to find the correct tyre pressure. This extends your tyre life, reduces the risk of accidents and avoids unnecessary expense.

5. Dot Code

The dot code is found on the circumference of the tyre. The code is a four digit number which signifies when the tyre was constructed. The first two numbers indicate the week of production, while the last two numbers specify the year.

6. World’s Most Expensive Tyres

The world’s most expensive tyres cost a staggering $600,000. These tyres are encrusted with diamonds and 24 carat gold.

7. Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems

Tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) constantly monitor the tyre pressure of all four tyres. The driver is alerted if there is any change in this pressure or temperature.

8. Winter Tyres

Winter tyres work to their optimum levels in temperatures constantly under 7*C. They contain natural rubber and a less affected by icy or snowy conditions. Winter tyres also contain extremely high grip levels in wintry conditions, improving car safety.

9. Runflat Tyres

Runflat tyres have reinforced sidewalls which ensure they can travel a limited distance without air. Due to this, there is no need for a road-side repair if you occur a flat tyre. It is not advisable to repair a runflat tyre, it is recommended to replace if punctured.

10. Road Accidents

Under inflated tyres or tyres below the legal tread depth are liable to a number of accidents each year (please see table within infographic). Ensure that you keep safe when driving in all conditions.
