I demoulded the firewall moulding this morning. The reason for doing this is the fact the fiberglass sets over time. After laminating it late yesterday it was well set this morning but still relatively soft. Gettig it out in one piece demanded that I remove it whilst still somewhat pliable. After a bit of struggle i got it demoulded in one piece. I then trimmed it down and clamped it to some stiff wood and aluminium angle. I will leave it for another day in the clamped position so that the resin will cure fully. Then will be a few more layers and finishing to do before I will have a perfect part.

I had a trip to town today. Stopped at Bendu laser cutting and picked op some cut plates. Had a long chat with Ben about his bussines.I picked up some 6mm round bar to make some of the parts for moulding the front compartment i also completed the fiberglass work on the inside.

Today was demoulding the front panels and I am satisfied that I will get some decent parts. Then it was onto the under bonnet area. This is another of those moulded from a rusty old body that was none too straight to start with i made a stiffener using round bar which was made oversize to incorporate the spare wheel well area.i will be making this from metal sheet. When I first made the rear seat area I made the center of the seat area much larger using a 25 liter plastic can to make an area. As time went by i realised that although functional it was hardly aesthetically pleasing. My friend Gary made me a splash mould for the center area. It was a 1 layer mould and today I added another layer. All in all a productive day

Today started on the next set of patterns that is plaaned for the replicas. Most replica cars has a void behind the front wheels which is ideal for trapping mud and debris. 356 cars from Porsche had a nicely shaped splash panel to prevent this. I managed to make some splash mouldings from a car and used these to make rough parts. The concern is that the Porsche part does not fit a replica easily i therefore had to extend the material and did this by using an old sign as an extension piece. I duly reinforced it by using Fiberglass. Hopefully I can demould it easily. I recieved some nice bits today. Some original type door latches an ignition switch wheel adaptors and some other parts.

Now that the firewall pattern is basically ready for the mould to be made. I am actively starting on the next patterns ...

Now that the firewall pattern is basically ready for the mould to be made. I am actively starting on the next patterns that would allow me to make parts for the projects. As can be seen making a moulding of a rusty old body is not the best way but sometimes the only way.

This morning I filled all the blemishes I could find. I also filled the bottom edge at an angle. To do this I made a spacer from some welding wire and taped it to the edge of the part. I then mixed up some fine putty and using the aplicator I aplied filler in such a way that the filler was applied at an angle. I sanded and refilled the area until I had a nice angled surface which should allow the mould to release when it is done. I then gave a generous coat of MS primer again and some black guide coat. Once dry I started sanding again. When I did the first MS primer I sanded with 120 grit and the second coat was sanded with 320 grit. I will be painting again with MS primer and this time the sanding will be done with 400 grit. After that Comes the final coat of gloss paint.

Most replica 356 cars do not have a latch for the rear decklid. I found this canopy latch om Takelot and bought one for testing. To start off the locking bit was 180 degrees off which would have made fitting it difficult. Although it was crimped together I was able to open the crimps and reverse the latch. The part thet fits the lid still needs some thought as well as the latch itself as there is a part that pops the lid when the cable is pulled. I also started sanding the firewall panel and used some spot filler to correct most blemishes. I still need to make the bottom edge to have a slight angle for demoulding purposes. This will be added in the morning and then I can add another 2 or 3 coats of MS primer.

Today wasnt one of the best days of my life. Early I went to check on the paint progress on my 924 Porsche. Not a single oneof the points I raised on my previous visit has been attended to. They were putting filler on top of stone chip paint after specifically being asked to have a smooth valance as per original. The bonnet had holes drilled which I asked to be welded shut was closed with filler my car was being worked on outside his shop open to the elements. I have also asked that the sills be stripped and some dents removed. As can be seen the car has been primed but norhing done to the sills. I hope that my next visit will be more productive. After that I went to pick up a set of main bearings that I saw on marketplace. At this gentlemans place he took us on the ten cent tour of his place. The shed was dimly lit and I saw two old World war 2 tank Radial engines in the corner. I walked over and when I came to I was in a 2m deep pit that he was digging for servicing. I was out for about a minute ad came to as they were lowering a ladder down. Luckily I had a buddy with me and he took over and drove me home. My wife took me to ER and I was X- rayed and a CT scan of my neck. The DR pronounced no broken bones and told me I was likely to be sore for a couple of days and stiff. According to my frien there is a huge boulder at the bottom and I was lucky that I didnt smash into it. I can only give thanks to the Man above for looking after me today.
