FESTIVAL OF MOTORING NOW 4 DAYS

Due to three years of increased growth, the 4th annual Festival of Motoring has moved from three days of motoring passion to a four-day extravaganza!

The 4th annual Festival of Motoring, presented by WesBank, returns to the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit from 22-25 August 2019. The Festival of Motoring, organized by Messe Frankfurt, is the only motoring show in Southern Africa endorsed by NAAMSA and supported by local motor manufacturers.

Since its inception in 2016, the Festival of Motoring has shown consistent growth in terms of exhibitor participation and visitor attendees. 2018 saw over 67 000 visitors through the gates, and due to its popularity, an increase from three public show days to four is a testament to that positive growth. In 2019, show visitors will once again enjoy an interactive showcase of both active and static content including supercars, classic cars and historic and modern motorsport activations. Leading industry related after market and accessory companies will also exhibit at the event.

“The Festival of Motoring is not your average motoring event. It’s the only event that brings the entire industry together and allows visitors to not only view or compare the latest models, but experience the performance and handling of these vehicles on the track. Our focus will always be to create the best experience for the visitor. As such, and due to the popularity of the track experiences, we have expanded the show to four public days. This means even more track time, allowing motoring brands to get visitors into cars,” says Denis Klopper, Festival of Motoring Show Director.

OEMs will, as in previous years, have a range of vehicles on display. Show visitors will have the opportunity to self-drive various models on the dedicated Kyalami Handling Track or be professionally driven around the world-class Grand Prix Circuit. An interactive 4X4 Area will again showcase a large range of off-road vehicles. A key focus of this year’s show will be future technology, a major factor in an evolving industry. The Tech Zone will showcase the future on mobility.

The Festival of Motoring will once again focus on the family. A large variety of catering areas and refreshments will be available with numerous dedicated kiddies’ areas.

Further information on new activations, hospitality and other exciting visitor packages will be announced soon.

Tickets for the event will be available in early April 2019.

For more information visit www.safestivalofmotoring.com.

See you at Kyalami

Volkswagen Motorsport aims to leave even deeper marks on the racing circuits of South Africa during what promises to be an exciting 2019 motorsport season. "We had an incredible year in 2018 and 2019 promises to be even better year," commented Mike Rowe, Head of Volkswagen Motorsport. "This is mainly due to important developments that will collectively assist in creating excitement for motorsport fans across the country, ensure the sustainability of motorsport and especially circuit racing going forward. Most importantly for us as a factory team, to earn us a few more championships in the respective series in which we compete."

The Polo Cup is by far the longest running and most successful racing formula in South Africa. Over a period of more than two decades, the series, which fields up to 30 drivers who compete in equal Volkswagen Polos, has provided race fans with some of the best and most memorable moments ever seen on local circuits. More importantly, it also played a major role in the careers of most of successful racing driver the country has produced over the last 30 years.

"We would like to express our gratitude to Engen for the integral role they played over many years in making the Polo Cup such a success, but in the same breath, we would like to welcome Falken Tyres as the new title sponsor for the series," added Rowe. "Not only will the series will be known as the Falken Polo Cup, but all the Polos will be fitted with Falken slick racing tyres which should assist in making the racing even more competitive. We are certainly looking forward to the partnership."

Universal Healthcare is also no stranger to the sport and through its medical scheme Compcare, the healthcare giants will further increase its level of involvement with the series. In addition, Universal Health will also field a team of no less than four cars headed by the current champion Jeffrey Kruger who will be back to defend his title.

"The Falken Polo Cup has never looked better and with three more cars and six new drivers joining the series we have every reason to believe that this form of racing will continue to be successful for decades to come," commented Rowe.

2019 Volkswagen factory team driver line-up

For Volkswagen Motorsport itself, it is also time to turn the attention to the job at hand. At the end of the day, Volkswagen Motorsport is a racing team and for 2019, the team will once again have its sights firmly set on both the Falken Polo Cup as well as the GTC trophies. Besides being responsible for the running of the Falken Polo Cup, Volkswagen Motorsport will have two factory drivers competing in the series. The revelation of the past two seasons must have been Jonathan Mogotsi who came agonisingly close to clinching the title in 2018. "Jonathan has developed into a real racing driver and after being in the title fight until the very last round of 2018, we expect even more from him in 2019." Mogotsi will be joined by Raais Asmal who developed his craft in a regional series during 2018. "Raais has come a long way in a short time and we believe that he is now ready for the big time. He has a very mature approach to things and we are looking forward to seeing his progress in 2019."

Volkswagen Motorsport's team that will contest the country's premier circuit racing formula, the GTC series, will consist of four drivers. Bradley Liebenberg will join Adrian Wood in the fleet of all-conquering Golf GTIs in the GTC2 category. "We all know that the GTI is championship winning car. We also know the talent and driving abilities of both Bradley and Adrian, so we hope that we will remain the team to beat in GTC2," added Rowe. Liebenberg will have backing from Smartcall while the Wood GTI will once again sport Kyocera livery. Double GTC2 champion Keagan Masters will now make the jump to the premier GTC category where he will join teammate Daniel Rowe in the Volkswagen GTC Jettas.

"Keagan has more than earned his drive by dominating the GTC2 category over the last two seasons while Daniel proved to be one of the quickest drivers in the GTC field last year. Between the two of them, we have every reason to believe that we will be extremely competitive during 2019," concluded Rowe.

Both Volkswagen's factory teams competing in the Falken Polo Cup and GTC series will be in action during Round One of the 2019 Extreme Festival to be held at the beautiful Dezzi Raceway on the South Coast of KZN over the weekend of 1 and 2 March.

WHAT CAR? COTY AWARDS

The “Quadrifoglio” models of Alfa Romeo win the “What Car?” Car of the Year awards 2019

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio wins ‘Performance Car of the Year’ category in What Car? Car of the Year 2019 awards following last year’s ‘Sports Car’ win
Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifgolio wins ‘Best Sports SUV for more than £60,000’
The Quadrifoglio badge once again lives up to its name, amassing two more accolades for the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2019.

Judged by the expert team at What Car?, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio took home the gong for ‘Performance Car of the Year’, following its ‘Sports Car’ category win in 2018, while the Stelvio Quadrifoglio fought off stiff competition to take the crown for ‘Best Sports SUV for more than £60,000’.

The Giulia Quadrifoglio came in for praise from Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car?, saying “It’s often said that getting to the top is easier than staying there. So by that reckoning, the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s second Car of the Year category win is arguably a greater success than its first. But it should be no surprise – after all, we’re talking about a comfortable, spacious, well-equipped saloon that’s more fun to drive than rivals costing tens of thousands more”.

Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor said of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio: “The hottest version of the Stelvio SUV is outrageously fast, but still feels light and responsive thanks to steering that's super-quick without making the car feel nervous. Add in great body control and four-wheel drive traction and the Quadrifoglio continually encourages you to make the most of its performance”.

Both the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio are powered by a 510hp, 600Nm Bi-Turbo V6 petrol engine, which allows them to reach a top speed of 191mph and 176mph respectively, while reaching 62mph from zero in just 3.9 seconds in the Giulia and 3.8 seconds in the Stelvio.

Arnaud Leclerc, managing director FCA UK, commented: “Alfa Romeo’s have always appealed to the heart with their Italian passion, flare and dynamics, but these awards show that the latest models also appeal to the head. To see the pinnacles of the new Alfa Romeo range lauded by the experts at What Car? makes these wins even more rewarding”.

20 November 2018
Ford Commences Production of All-New Ranger Raptor Engine

New four-cylinder turbodiesel engines will power the Ford Ranger Raptor and selected Ranger and Everest models due for launch in 2019
Highest-ever installed capacity for Struandale Engine Plant of up to 250 000 engines per year, in conjunction with expanded Duratorq TDCi engine programme
Sophisticated assembly line for new engine including eight fully automated robotic stations
Port elizabeth, South Africa, 20 November 2018 – The Ford Struandale Engine Plant commenced production of the new-generation diesel engines that are set to power the new Ford Ranger Raptor and selected Ranger and Everest models that will be launched in the first half of 2019.

Assembled on an all-new high-tech assembly line, the start of production for the new engine programme marks an important milestone for the Port Elizabeth facility, which opened its doors in 1964 and has produced over 3.4-million engines to date.

“With the launch of the new diesel engines, the Struandale Engine Plant embarks on a historic new journey, as it almost doubles our combined installed capacity to 250 000 units for our two engine programmes,” says John Cameron, Plant Manager of the Struandale Engine Plant.

As part of Ford’s 2017 investment of over R3-billion in its South African operations, the plant’s new assembly line has an installed capacity to produce up to 120 000 engines per year. The new engine programme starts off with low-volume production for the remainder of this year, then begins ramping up from early 2019.

The new assembly line will produce a total of eight derivatives of the new engines, including the advanced 157kW / 500Nm Bi-Turbo unit. All of these engines will be supplied to Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria for installation in selected new Ford Ranger and Everest models and, of course, the highly anticipated Ford Ranger Raptor. Ford’s local vehicle production supports domestic sales along with 148 export markets globally.

Reinforcing its high-tech status, the new state-of-the-art engine assembly line incorporates a cylinder head sub-assembly line that uses four fully automated robots to ensure the precise fitment of components, as well as high-pressure leak testing.

There are four more robotic stations on the main assembly line that apply the special room temperature vulcanising (RTV) silicone gaskets, with each operation monitored by integrated camera inspection systems that guarantee the highest levels of precision and quality control.

Each of the 110 assembly stations along the 312-metre line incorporates extensive error-proofing and traceability, and every engine is subjected to an in-depth cold test at the end of the assembly line to verify operating parameters and pressures of all systems, without physically starting the engine.

This is backed up by a hot test cell to test engine parameters when running, as well as a fully equipped dynamometer that conducts a wide range of performance and durability tests on selected engines at predetermined intervals.

Continuing alongside the new programme, the existing Duratorq TDCi engine programme has seen annual installed capacity increase from 75 000 units in 2011 to a maximum capacity of up to 130 000 units from the end of 2018. This engine platform will continue to be offered in the range of vehicles produced in Silverton, as well as exported to global customers.

In addition, the Struandale plant’s machining capacity for the Duratorq TDCi programme has increased from an original 220 000 component sets (cylinder head, block and crankshaft) to a peak of up to 280 000 to meet the growing demand.

“Completing the launch for the new diesel engine programme while expanding our existing machining and assembly operations without disrupting our normal production is a great achievement and accolade for the Struandale Engine Plant team,” Cameron adds.

The much anticipated All-New Renault DUSTER redefines tough

The All-New Renault Duster is here, and it’s obvious to see why it’s been deemed ‘The unstoppable SUV' with –

All-New exterior styling that matches its more robust character
Totally enhanced interior design with high-quality finishes and added equipment to ensure an extremely comfortable driving experience
Class-leading Ground Clearance of 210mm, with approach and departure angles suited for all-terrain driving
New smart features demonstrating next level technological advancement, with the likes of:
MultiView Camera
Hill Descent Control
Blind Spot Detection
Extremely frugal fuel consumption from only 4.8L/100km to allow one to travel further for less
The introduction of a diverse range with an extremely competitive price point ranging from only R249 900, enabling accessibility to an adventurous lifestyle
With more than two million cars sold globally, the Duster has been revamped seven successful years after its original release. The All-New Renault Duster boasts all-new exterior styling to deliver a distinctly assertive and robust look. The car offers a step-up in perceived quality with a totally redesigned interior for a comfortable and user-friendly cabin experience.

Equipped with new driving aids and new equipment, the All-New Duster is a genuine SUV – both versatile and comfortable for everyday driving.

The original Renault Duster was designed and engineered to adeptly master tough road conditions, but in a more modest form. The Duster has proved to be extremely popular in the SA market with over 15,000 units sold to date since its initial launch.

The All-New Renault Duster builds on and reinforces the Duster’s existing strengths, but the renowned DNA of the Duster remains at the core; i.e. an extremely capable SUV, which is tough, simple and reliable, yet accessible based on the value proposition.

ROBUST, OFF-ROADER LOOKS

The All-New Renault Duster boasts an all-new exterior styling delivering a distinctly assertive and robust look, highlighting its SUV pedigree. Visually more muscular, the design tone is set by the more aggressive lines, and a more expressive front and rear, heightening the impression of stability. The Duster’s rugged stance is emphasised by its bold, more horizontal lines, 16” or new 17” wheels ensuring a more assertive profile, new more prominent aluminium roof bars, and front and rear skid plates that support its adventurer credentials. The chrome trim of the grille, alongside a raised waistline and the powerful C-shaped light signature complete the powerful stance of the New Duster.

To top it all, the New Renault Duster now has even greater off-road capabilities evident by the class-leading ground clearance of 210mm, with approach and departure angles suited for all terrain driving.

QUALITY AND COMFORT ALL THE WAY

The interior of the All-New Renault Duster is marked by a bright and spacious cabin. The upholstery features a high-quality finish, as does the dashboard, where particular emphasis has been placed on ergonomic design.

Travelling comfort is further heightened by the newly designed and more enveloping seats, numerous easily accessible stowage spaces and improved accessibility of controls, and amongst others, an enhanced Multimedia experience.

The New Duster also offers a modular interior layout to easily adapt to needs, with the rear bench seat featuring a 1/3 – 2/3 split-fold function, while the boot boasts record loading capacity of up to 478L.

The New Renault Duster presents easier driving with keyless entry. A hands-free card automatically unlocks the doors as one approaches the vehicle and automatically locks the car as you walk away. A handy stop start button allows for the convenience of just pressing a button to start or stop the vehicle without necessitating direct use of the key card.

And to facilitate stress-free everyday driving, Blind Spot warning detects any obscured vehicles whilst the Automatic Climate Control, Speed Limiter and Cruise Control functions provide superb driving support on the open road.

EQUIPPED TO GO FURTHER

The All-New Renault Duster is distinct through its range of high-class equipment to enhance the vehicle’s off-road prowess, such as Hill Descent Control within the 4x4 model, enabling smooth descent of hills without use of the brake. A MultiView Camera allows for easy visibility of the front, rear or side terrain, triggered by the reverse gear or by a simple touch of the dedicated button.

The innovative 4x4 monitor allows one to even check the pitch and roll angles of the Duster at any given time.

With the Transmission Mode Selector on the 4x4 Model, the driver is able to switch between 3 driving modes: 2WD Mode where the engine torque is distributed to the front wheels, Automatic Mode allowing distribution of engine torque over the 4 wheels or Lock Mode for engine torque distribution to all four wheels.

The New Duster offers a multitude of advanced active and passive safety technology as standard across the range, such as ABS [Anti-Lock Braking System] with EBD [Electronic Brake Force Distribution] in conjunction with EBA [Emergency Brake Assist], making it possible to maintain control over the trajectory in the event of heavy braking.

Rear Park Distance Control enables easier parking manoeuvres by warning the driver of obstacles situated behind the vehicle by a sequence of beeps which speed up the closer you are to them. Hill Start Assist, triggered by taking one’s foot off the brake, takes over the vehicle by holding it steady for 2 seconds, allowing the driver to accelerate normally without stalling or rolling back.

POWERFUL YET ECONOMICAL

The phenomenal All-New Renault Duster comes with two fuel options and three engine options.

There is a choice between the 1.6L 16V and two versions of the incredible 1.5 dCi turbo engine.

With the Duster 1.5 dCi, driver confidence and comfort are brought to the fore. The Diesel 1.5 dCi 4x2’s engine has outputs of 66kW and 210Nm and consumes from only 5.1L/100km. The 4x2 EDC and 4x4 Manual versions have outputs of 80kW and 250Nm with consumption from only 4.8L/100km.

For greater comfort and pleasure, the 6-speed Dual-Clutch EDC Automatic gearbox is now available with the 1.5 dCi Diesel engine. Upshifting is fast and smooth, with no jerking or loss in acceleration, with fuel consumption is comparable to that of the Manual from only 4.8L/100km.

PEACE OF MIND COMES STANDARD

As is standard across Renault’s entire product range, the All-New Renault Duster Model ranges comes standard with a 5-year/150 000km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty. Services take place at 15 000km intervals, and a standard 3year/45000km service plan applies.

The All-New Renault Duster has a bolder personality, both inside and out, and is now way better equipped to take the SUV Market by storm.
