Aluminium diesel tanks became increasingly popular in South Africa from the late 20th century as transport, agriculture, and mining operators sought lighter, longer-lasting alternatives to steel. Aluminium naturally forms a protective oxide layer that resists corrosion, making it particularly valuable in harsh operating environments where moisture, dust, and long-distance travel can shorten the lifespan of conventional tanks. The weight savings also allow vehicles to carry more payload while reducing overall vehicle mass, helping make aluminium tanks a common sight on modern trucks and heavy equipment.
Fun fact: an aluminium tank can weigh 30–50% less than a comparable steel tank while offering similar fuel capacity.
