If you've got a car with the F16D4 engine or you're thinking about buying one, here's what you need to know.
The F16D4 is a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine built by GM. It uses a cast-iron engine block for durability, an aluminum 16-valve DOHC cylinder head, and dual variable valve timing to improve both performance and fuel economy.
In terms of power, it produces between 113 and 124 horsepower, with around 152 to 155 Newton-meters of torque. It's not a performance engine, but it delivers smooth, reliable power that's well suited to everyday driving.
Fuel is supplied through a multi-point fuel injection system, and the engine runs a relatively high compression ratio of around 11 to 1. One thing to remember is that it uses a timing belt, not a timing chain, so replacing the belt at the recommended service interval is essential.
When it comes to maintenance, the F16D4 is generally a dependable engine. However, owners should keep an eye on the variable valve timing actuators, the oil cooler, the thermostat, and the ignition coil, as these are the most common components to develop problems over time.
