Trial Dates Set in Former Klerksdorp Attorney's Culpable Homicide Case

Nearly two years after four young Klerksdorp residents lost their lives in a devastating crash, the culpable homicide case against former attorney Edward Letsie (34) is finally expected to move to trial in September.

Letsie faces four counts of culpable homicide relating to the deaths of Ruan Esterhuizen (21), Jackie Willis (21), Max Knott-Craig (22) and Jané Janse van Rensburg (19). The four friends were killed on 13 October 2024 when the vehicle they were travelling in was struck by a Mercedes-Benz at the intersection of the N12 and Plataan Avenue. Esterhuizen, Willis and Janse van Rensburg died at the scene, while Knott-Craig succumbed to his injuries in hospital. The Mercedes driver allegedly fled the scene before handing himself over to police two days later.

The matter has been plagued by repeated postponements since Letsie's first court appearance in January this year. Several delays were linked to changes in his legal team or the non-appearance of his legal representatives, frustrating the victims' families who have waited months for the matter to proceed.

The latest development is expected to remove another obstacle.

Regional Magistrate Tinus Boonzaaier directed that a new magistrate and prosecutor be appointed because Letsie previously practised as an attorney in Klerksdorp. The newly appointed magistrate is from Johannesburg, while the prosecutor only joined the Klerksdorp office last year and reportedly has no prior relationship with the accused. The trial has now been set down for 17 and 18 September.

The families have previously expressed concern that Letsie's legal background gives him a detailed understanding of the justice system and could enable procedural delays. Jané Janse van Rensburg's father, Albie, previously said they had prepared themselves for the possibility that the case could continue to be drawn out unless meaningful progress was made.

Ruan Esterhuizen's sister, Cherice Grobler, said the confirmation of trial dates has brought renewed hope after months of uncertainty.

"After so many postponements and uncertainty, it finally feels like the case is moving forward. While we understand the legal process takes its course, having firm dates gives us hope that the matter will finally be heard."

She added that while no court process can bring their loved ones back, the families remain committed to seeing the matter through.

"Justice is important - not only for our families, but for accountability and the truth."

From SA's Best to one of the world's best

In December, Klerksdorp Connect celebrated Mbulelo Tolom after he was crowned South Africa's top young speller.

Now, the 13-year-old Grade 7 learner from Klerksdorp Primary School has taken that success to the world stage, finishing an outstanding sixth overall at the World Spelling Bee Championship in Shanghai, China.

Mbulelo, the youngest member of the six-person Team South Africa, competed against learners from higher grades from across the globe, helping South Africa secure fourth place overall.

What an incredible journey in just a few months. Congratulations, Mbulelo - Klerksdorp couldn't be prouder.

A Stilfontein resident writes:"This is the reality our communities have been forced to live with.

For years, the City of Matlosana Parks Department has neglected to cut and maintain overgrown grass in our public open spaces. As a result, frustrated residents have resorted to burning the grass themselves just to make these areas manageable.

Unfortunately, this has come at a heavy cost. Fires have damaged water meters, destroyed electrical infrastructure, and placed nearby homes and residents at serious risk. In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a vigilant resident had to alert the community after another fire broke out. The Fire Brigade was called to prevent the flames from spreading further. Yet today, Wednesday, some parts of these open spaces are still smouldering and burning.
The question residents deserve an answer to is this:

With tariff increases year after year, what exactly are residents paying for?
If basic services such as maintaining parks and open spaces are neglected, if roads continue to deteriorate under countless potholes, and if communities are left to deal with dangerous situations on their own, then where is the value for the money residents are expected to pay?"
