Interesting news we came across: Tiger Brands has started moving part of its Albany bakery fleet onto alternative fuels.

Fourteen CNG trucks, one fuelling point at the bakery, and a five-year target to shift 10% of the fleet.

What makes this interesting is that they aren't betting everything on one technology. CNG, electric, hybrid and solar are being tested side by side, on real routes, with real mileage and real operating conditions.

That is probably the right way to approach a transition where nobody has all the answers yet.

Commercial fleets are where these technologies get properly tested. A CNG truck brings different requirements from an electric delivery vehicle. A hybrid introduces different charging behaviour, electrical loads and potential failure points again.

And that changes what happens downstream.

The fitment centre that once dealt predominantly with conventional lead-acid batteries is increasingly dealing with a much wider range of vehicle technologies and electrical systems.

Technicians need broader electrical knowledge. Diagnostics need to keep pace. For fitment centres, that means understanding a wider range of battery and electrical system requirements across the vehicles coming through the bay.

Marine batteries operate in a demanding environment.

Boats, outboard motors, inboard engines, jet skis, trolling motors and onboard electrical equipment all place different demands on a battery.

Vibration is a major consideration. Engine vibration, wave impact and constant movement put mechanical stress on the battery and its internal components. Marine batteries are designed to withstand higher levels of vibration than conventional automotive batteries.

Then there is moisture. In saltwater environments, salt and humidity accelerate corrosion around terminals, connections and other exposed components. Battery connections need to be kept clean, tight and protected.

The electrical demand also changes according to the application.

Starting an outboard or inboard engine requires a high current for a short period. A trolling motor can draw power continuously for hours. Fish finders, GPS and chartplotters, VHF radios, bilge pumps, lighting and other onboard equipment add further electrical loads.

That is why marine applications can require starting, deep-cycle or dual-purpose batteries, depending on what the battery is expected to power and how it is used.

There is another consideration with marine batteries: periods of inactivity. Boats and jet skis can sit for weeks or months between use, while the battery can slowly lose charge and connected equipment may continue to draw power.

If the vessel is going to be stored for an extended period, disconnect the battery where appropriate, or use a suitable battery maintainer if the battery is remaining connected. If the battery is removed from the vessel, store it correctly and keep it maintained.

“My battery keeps dying after being replaced under warranty. This is the second new one. What’s wrong with my battery?”

If the second battery has also gone flat, the battery itself may not be the problem.

Repeated discharge on a replacement battery usually points to something else in the vehicle causing the failure, not the battery.

Four areas to check:

• Charging system faults - the alternator may be undercharging or overcharging the battery.

• Parasitic drain - something may keep drawing power after the ignition is off. Trackers, alarms and infotainment systems are common culprits.

• Incorrect specification - the wrong capacity or battery technology for the vehicle can lead to poor performance and early failure.

• Installation errors - loose terminals, poor connections or corrosion can stop the battery from charging properly.

Two new batteries failing in a row isn’t bad luck. It’s a sign the fault sits elsewhere in the vehicle.

Battery Myth of the Week: Lithium Batteries Are Recycled Like Lead-Acid Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries require a different recycling route from lead-acid batteries.

South Africa has a well-established lead-acid battery recycling industry. When you replace a vehicle battery, you generally hand the old battery back to the fitment centre. From there, it enters an established collection and recycling chain, with materials such as lead and plastic recovered for reuse.

Lithium-ion batteries require specialised collection, handling, transport and processing. The recycling infrastructure developed around traditional automotive batteries is not designed to process lithium-ion chemistry.

When lithium-ion batteries are handed in at fitment or service centres, they therefore need to enter an appropriate specialist collection and waste-management chain. This is particularly important because damaged lithium-ion batteries can present a fire risk during storage and transport.

South Africa's lithium-ion recycling industry is now developing its own infrastructure. Specialist operators are providing dedicated collection and compliant transport, while a modular lithium-ion recycling facility in Germiston is recovering materials including lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese for potential reuse.

For the customer, the process often looks much the same: you buy a replacement battery and hand in the old one.

What happens after collection depends on the battery chemistry.

Ask Bill - Why do modern vehicles need batteries linked to a Battery Management System?

Many modern vehicles do more than use a battery to start the engine. They constantly monitor the battery's condition through a Battery Management System (BMS).

Think of the BMS as the vehicle's battery supervisor. It measures the battery's state of charge, temperature and overall condition, then shares that information with the vehicle's computer. The computer uses this data to decide how and when the battery should be charged.

This has become increasingly important because today's vehicles place far greater demands on their batteries than older models. Features such as stop-start technology, advanced safety systems, infotainment, climate control and dozens of electronic control units all rely on a healthy power supply.

When a battery is replaced, the new battery often needs to be registered or coded to the vehicle. This tells the BMS that a new battery has been fitted. Without this step, the system may continue charging the battery as though the old one is still installed, which can shorten battery life and affect vehicle performance.

Not every vehicle requires battery coding, but many newer European and premium vehicles do. Fitting the correct battery is only part of the job. Making sure the vehicle recognises it is just as important.
