Battery Myth #45: A battery only powers the car when starting.

Your car battery does much more than start the engine.

In a conventional car, the alternator supplies most of the electrical power while the engine runs and recharges the battery. But the battery remains part of the electrical system, helping stabilise voltage and supplying power when demand temporarily exceeds alternator output. This can happen at low engine speeds when headlights, the fan and other electrical equipment are drawing power.

Modern vehicles place additional demands on the battery. Electronic control units, sensors and other systems need a stable electrical supply.

Stop-start technology makes the battery’s role even more apparent. When the engine switches off at traffic lights, the alternator stops generating power. Ask Bill: Why do stop-start systems need different batteries?

Stop-start technology switches off your engine when you come to a standstill and restarts it when you’re ready to move. It saves fuel by reducing the time your engine spends idling.

But every time the engine stops, your battery has a job to do.

Unlike a conventional vehicle battery, which mainly starts the engine, a stop-start battery must handle repeated engine restarts while continuing to power the vehicle’s electrical systems. It needs to cope with more frequent charge and discharge cycles, particularly in heavy traffic.

That’s why stop-start vehicles generally require an EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) battery, depending on the vehicle’s specifications.

EFB batteries are designed for vehicles with standard stop-start systems. AGM batteries offer greater cycling capability and are often used in vehicles with more demanding electrical requirements, including advanced stop-start systems.

The important point? Your replacement battery must match your vehicle’s requirements. Fitting a conventional battery where an EFB or AGM is specified may lead to premature battery failure and interfere with the stop-start system’s operation.

The alternator tests okay, but the battery keeps going flat. So where is the problem?

An alternator test confirms that the alternator is producing the expected output under the conditions tested. It doesn’t necessarily explain why the battery is losing charge during normal use.

A parasitic drain is one possibility. Something may continue drawing current after the vehicle is switched off. Interior or boot lights, aftermarket alarms, trackers, dashcams, audio equipment or an electronic module that fails to enter sleep mode can gradually drain the battery.

Short journeys are another common cause. Starting the vehicle uses energy, and repeated short trips may not give the charging system enough time to replace it, particularly when lights, climate control, heated screens and other electrical equipment are being used.

Then check the connections. Loose or corroded battery terminals, charging cables or earth connections introduce resistance into the electrical system. A poor engine or chassis earth can affect charging even when the alternator itself is working correctly.

The alternator’s drive belt needs attention too. If it is worn, loose or slipping, the alternator may not consistently deliver its output under actual driving conditions.

And sometimes the battery itself is the problem. An ageing battery, internal damage, sulphation or a failed cell can leave the charging system functioning while the battery fails to retain its charge.

In modern vehicles, battery sensors and battery management systems monitor the battery and control aspects of the charging system. A fault in this system can affect charging even when the alternator itself tests correctly.

When a battery keeps going flat, testing the alternator is only one part of the diagnosis. The battery, connections, electrical loads and vehicle’s electrical management system all need to be considered.

Myth: You can charge any car battery with any charger.

False.

Conventional flooded lead-acid, EFB, AGM and lithium batteries require charging profiles matched to their chemistry and construction.

A charger controls voltage, current and the stages of the charging cycle. Conventional lead-acid batteries use a standard lead-acid charging profile, while EFB batteries are designed to accept higher charge acceptance and more frequent cycling. AGM batteries require tighter voltage control because overcharging can dry out the electrolyte and damage the battery. Lithium batteries require a lithium-specific charging profile and appropriate control from the battery management system.

Using the wrong settings can leave a battery undercharged, cause excessive heat, accelerate degradation or result in permanent damage.

Battery capacity, state of charge and condition influence the charging process, so the charger needs to be correctly configured for the battery being charged.

The starting point is the battery manufacturer's specification and the appropriate charging profile.

Your alternator charges the battery while the engine is running and supplies power to the vehicle’s electrical systems.

When an alternator starts failing, it may not produce enough power to keep the battery charged. You may notice a battery warning light, dimming or flickering lights, electrical systems behaving differently or difficulty starting the vehicle.

But these symptoms can look very similar to a failing battery.

A battery can reach the end of its service life and lose its ability to hold a charge. An alternator can fail and stop replacing the energy the battery uses while the engine is running. In both cases, you can eventually end up with a flat battery and a vehicle that won’t start.

It isn’t easy for you to tell which component is responsible just by looking at what the car is doing. That’s where proper testing comes in.

A 44-tonne electric truck that can add 400 km in 20 minutes

BYD has unveiled the ETT 44, a fully electric heavy-duty truck designed to operate at up to 44 tonnes gross combination weight.

The 4x2 electric tractor has a 651 kWh Blade Battery, a rated power output of 743 PS and peak power of up to 1,000 PS. Its claimed range is up to 600 km.

The really interesting figure, however, is the charging time.

Using BYD's 1.5 MW charging system, the ETT 44 can charge from 20% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes. BYD says this can add around 400 km of range.

That has significant implications for heavy transport.

A truck operating long-distance routes needs to spend as much time as possible moving freight. If a substantial amount of range can be restored during a short scheduled stop, charging becomes much easier to incorporate into normal operations.

In Europe, where long-distance truck drivers have regulated rest periods, the charging time could fit into the driver's existing schedule rather than requiring several additional hours off the road.

Of course, the claimed 600 km range is not a fixed figure. Actual range will depend on payload, terrain, weather, road conditions and driving style. A 1.5 MW charging system also requires the infrastructure and electrical supply to support it.

But the development demonstrates how quickly the technology is changing. For BatteryCorp and the wider battery industry, developments in Blade Battery chemistry and megawatt charging are worth tracking closely, even outside the automotive sector directly.

The challenge for electric heavy transport is not simply building a battery large enough to move a 44-tonne combination. It is creating a vehicle that can carry the load, travel a useful distance and recharge quickly enough to remain commercially practical.

The ETT 44 is aimed directly at that challenge.

For anyone involved in transport, logistics or fleet operations, developments like this are worth watching closely.

A 44-tonne electric truck that can add 400 km in 20 minutes

BYD has unveiled the ETT 44, a 4x2 electric tractor designed for up to 44 tonnes gross combination weight.

It has a 651 kWh battery, 743 PS rated power, peak power of up to 1,000 PS and a claimed range of up to 600 km.

The striking figure is its charging time.

Using BYD's 1.5 MW charging system, the ETT 44 can charge from 20% to 80% in about 20 minutes. BYD says that adds around 400 km of range.

For a working truck, that could make a major difference. If hundreds of kilometres can be restored during a scheduled stop, charging becomes much easier to fit into a normal operating day. In Europe, it could potentially align with regulated driver rest periods.

There is an important qualification: this is a newly unveiled model, not a truck with years of fleet operation behind it. BYD has not presented evidence that the ETT 44 is already in routine commercial service in China, and European sales are expected to begin progressively in the first half of 2027.

Actual range will depend on payload, terrain, weather and driving conditions, while 1.5 MW charging requires substantial electrical infrastructure.

Still, 44 tonnes, up to 600 km of range and around 400 km recovered in 20 minutes gives a useful indication of where electric heavy transport is heading.
