Porsche Was Broke. So Mercedes Hired Them to Build This Car.

In the late 1980s, Porsche was in real financial trouble, sales were down, and the company needed work. Around the same time, Mercedes-Benz had a problem of its own: they'd designed a monster performance sedan, but it was too wide to fit down their own factory assembly line.

Their solution solved both problems at once. Mercedes-Benz handed the entire project to Porsche.

The result was the 500 E internally, Porsche called it "Project 2758." A 5.0-litre V8 borrowed straight from the SL roadster, dropped into the elegant, understated W124 E-Class body. It could hit 100km/h in just 5.9 seconds putting it in the same company as a Ferrari Mondial and Porsche's own 911 Carrera 2.

But here's the twist: it barely looked any different from a regular Mercedes sedan. Slightly flared fenders, a slightly lower stance that's it. No wings, no badges shouting for attention. Just a business-class sedan that could humiliate sports cars at a stoplight.

That's exactly why it earned its nickname: the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Each car was shuttled back and forth between the Mercedes and Porsche factories four separate times, taking a painstaking 18 days to build six times longer than a standard W124. Every single 500 E was, quite literally, hand-built by Porsche.

Today it's remembered as one of the greatest sleeper sedans ever made proof that true performance doesn't need to shout.
