🚙 TOYOTA LAND CRUISER FJ: TOUGH LOOKS, BUT IS THE ENGINE ENOUGH?

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is turning heads in South Africa with its retro-inspired design and genuine off-road credentials.

Built on a ladder-frame chassis, the FJ comes equipped with 4WD, 4H and 4L low-range modes, a locking rear differential and 245 mm of ground clearance giving it the hardware to take on serious terrain.

But its latest South African review has raised one major concern: the 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine.

With 122 kW and 245 Nm, the engine has been criticised for feeling underpowered, particularly at Highveld altitude, while real-world fuel consumption during testing reached around 13.0 L/100 km.

Starting at R714,000, the FJ brings genuine Land Cruiser off-road capability into a more accessible price range but would a diesel engine have made it even better suited to South African conditions?

CHERY’S FIRST BAKKIE HAS A VERY SOUTH AFRICAN NAME

Chery has officially named its first-ever bakkie Grootman, following a public naming campaign in South Africa.

Set to arrive in South Africa in Q1 2027, the new plug-in hybrid bakkie is expected to bring serious numbers to the segment:

🛻 2.5L turbo-diesel hybrid
⚡ 350 kW combined output
💪 800 Nm of torque
🔋 Up to 100 km electric-only range
🏕️ Up to 3,500 kg braked towing capacity
🔌 Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality
🛞 4WD

The name Grootman meaning “big man” and also used locally as a term of respect was chosen by South Africans themselves.

Now, the question is: Is Grootman ready to take on South Africa’s bakkie giants? 👀
