Temperature variations expand and contract the windscreen on a continuous basis often causing a chip to develop small cracks that travel the length of the glass

Temperature & Vibration/Shock
Temperature variations expand and contract the windscreen on a continuous basis often causing a chip to develop small cracks that travel the length of the glass. If the inside temperature of a car reaches 60 degrees while the outside air temperature is 30 degrees, the inner layer of windscreen glass can expand while the outer layer of glass contracts, causing stress. Any small chip that exists in the windscreen is a weakend point and can begin to crack. More temperature variation, vibration (gravel roads/speed bumps/pot holes) can accelerate the crack's travel, in some cases, instantly.
