Common Mistakes When Changing Oil
π΄ Mistake 1: Not removing the O-ring from the old filter.
When the old filter ring sticks to the engine and you place the new one on top, a double seal is created, causing oil leaks when you start the engine.
π΄ Mistake 2: Not removing the oil cap before draining
Leaving the cap in place creates a vacuum in the system, making draining difficult and leaving dirty oil in the crankcase. Solution: Remove the filler cap before beginning the drain.
π΄ Mistake 3: Draining the oil when the engine is cold
Cold oil is thicker and doesn't flow completely, leaving contaminants in the system. Run the engine for a few minutes before changing the oil to facilitate a more complete drain.
π΄ Mistake 4: Overfilling the oil
Excessive oil can cause foaming, increase internal pressure, and risk damage to seals or the catalytic converter.
π΄ Mistake 5: Not checking the level after starting the engine
Once the oil circulates, it can settle and the level may drop. Solution: Check the level again after running the engine for a few minutes and correct it if necessary.
π΄ Mistake 6: Ignoring the change interval
Do not exceed the interval suggested for your engine and the type of oil you use.
π΄ Mistake 7: Not filling the new filter before installing it, although some people say this is not a problem for them.
π΄ Mistake 8: Not lubricating the filter's O-ring
Although this is a practice mostly recommended by technicians.
π΄ Mistake 9: Overtightening the oil pan bolt
Excessive torque can strip the threads or fracture the oil pan.
π΄ Mistake 10: Overtightening the oil filter
This can deform the gasket and make it difficult to remove at the next service.
π΄ Mistake 11: Checking the level on an inclined surface
Measuring on a slope gives an inaccurate reading, which can lead to overfilling or underfilling.
π΄ Mistake 12: Using low-quality or incorrect filters
Generic filters can clog or fail to filter properly.
π΄ Mistake 13: Using the wrong oil
An incorrect viscosity compromises lubrication and increases internal wear.
