One litre of used engine oil has the potential to contaminate up to one million litres of fresh water.

That fact alone is why every vehicle service should protect more than just your engine.

Behind the workshop doors, responsible MIWA-accredited workshops take steps to prevent oil, fuel, grease, coolant and other hazardous materials from contaminating our soil and water resources.

These steps include:
• Using oil-separation systems to help keep automotive pollutants out of municipal sewer systems
• Working with licensed collectors and recyclers to manage used oil and contaminated materials
• Keeping oil filters, oily rags and contaminated containers out of general waste
• Disposing of coolant through approved recycling or hazardous-waste systems
• Recovering and recycling as much air-conditioning refrigerant as possible

There are also two important safety warnings every motorist should know:
1. Used engine oil should never be used as a home remedy or to treat skin conditions on livestock. It may contain contaminants, heavy metals and combustion by-products that can harm people, animals and the environment.
2. Many modern coolants contain ethylene glycol, which is highly toxic. Because of its sweet taste, it may attract pets and wildlife and create a serious poisoning risk.

The next time you book your vehicle in, ask:
1. What happens to my used engine oil?
2. Are oil filters and contaminated containers recycled?
3. How is used coolant disposed of?
4. Is air-conditioning refrigerant recovered and recycled?

Choosing a workshop that can answer these questions clearly helps you make a more informed decision about who services your vehicle. Do you know how your workshop handles used oil, coolant and air-conditioning refrigerant?
