Champion season kicks-off, Saturday 3 May 2025 brings the prestigious R750 000 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes (Gr2) — the traditional curtain-raiser to Champions Season in KZN. A class field of twelve will battle it out, headlined by last year’s winner Royal Aussie, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by the charismatic Andrew Fortune.

All eyes are on Cousin Casey, runner-up in both the 2024 Durban July and HKJC Champions Cup, making his season debut from a tough draw. He’s back to challenge again after finishing second behind Royal Aussie in last year's Drill Hall. Meanwhile, See It Again joins the fight under the skilled Raymond Danielson, and local hero Gladatorian, trained by Stuart Ferrie, promises a powerful run for the podium.
