Is Your vehicles Oil black, sludgy or dark brown. This might be an indication of wear and deterioration with age.
Engine oils whether Base oils, mineral, synthetic or a combination of either are responsible for lubrication of frictional components, cooling of surfaces, heat transfer and protection against wear
The following reasons are why your vehicles oil might look like this
Oxidation
Reaction between oxygen and oil molecules, oxidation also increases the viscosity of the lowering its energy efficiency
High Heat
Modern engines especially Diesel engines runs in excess temperature ranges than ever before and this heat accelerates the oxidation process and breaks down more rapidly. In diesel engine soot from the combustion chamber enters the oil pan via the ring gap and turns the oil black faster than gasoline engines
Moisture
Infrequent use or driving over short intervals cause temperature variations inside the engine. This limits the engine from heating to the optimal temperature and expelling this moisture through the exhaust. Water content present cause accelerated formation of sludge
Additives
Additives such as antioxidation agents or anti wear agents create a protective layer that reduces wear however this sacrificial function also depletes these additives much faster hence regulary and timeous servicing is essential.
Synthetic vs Conventional Oil
Synthetic oils are more resilient to wear and oxidation and heat and tends to last longer than normal oils however the additives do deplete faster
So remember regularly servicing of your vehicle within the manufacturers guidelines will help your engine run longer and more efficiently for years to come. Not all oils are manufactured the same so always do you research
