Exams start on Tuesday 13 October. Parents and lift-club drivers: the last thing anyone needs on exam morning is a car that won’t start or a warning light that has just come on.

If the family car or bakkie is due, this is a sensible week to have it looked at (service, OBD scan, leak check) so exam mornings stay calm.

That fill that felt “a bit cheap” can cost you a pump and a set of injectors.

Paraffin mixed into diesel looks and smells almost like proper fuel, but it does not lubricate the same way. Your diesel bakkie or car may still drive away from the pump, then start telling on itself a few days later.

Signs to watch for:

Harder starting than usual, especially cold
Rough idle or a sudden flat spot when you pull away
Black or grey smoke that wasn’t there before
Power loss on hills or when towing
Fuel smell that is sharper / thinner than normal diesel
Filter clogging sooner than it should
What it does: paraffin strips the lubrication your high-pressure pump and injectors need. Metal starts wearing inside the fuel system, the filter catches the dirt, and if you keep driving, injectors and the turbo can follow.
