This week started with a beautiful 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser that came in for a sound upgrade.
Because the car was so well preserved we decided not to do anything that could not be reversed to get the car back to standard configuration.
This meant that we had to retain the factory speaker size and use the factory speaker positions.
The OEM head unit was replaced with a Sony XAV AX4000 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
For the front speakers I used Rockford Fosgate Prime R14X2 mounted in the factory dash locations. I 3D printed a filler ring to close the gap between the body of the speaker and the OEM speaker mount.
For the rear speakers in the rear doors I designed and 3D printed a speaker mount that utilised the three OEM mounting holes in the door and postioned the speaker perfectly in the speaker opening in the door card. With the speaker grille mounted on the door card and secured to the speaker mount, there was no chance of any vibrations.
The base speaker in the luggage area had succumbed to the ravages of time and had started to disintegrate. I found that the Rockford Fosgate Prime R1675X2 was a perfect fit in the factory mounting bracket. The low pass filter was still working perfectly and was connected to the 6.75 inch driver.
With everything connected and the polarity of the speakers tested, it was time for some old school test tunes.
Dire Straits' Money for Nothing was just the right song for the test and the upgraded system passed with flying colours.

This week I finished a nice upgrade in a Porsche Cayman.
The original radio was replaced with a Sony XAV-AX4000.
For speakers I went with Rockford Fosgate Punch P1675-S 6.75 inch splits in front with Rockford Fosgate Punch P132 co-axials in the rear.
The speakers and tweeters were mounted in the factory locations for a nice OEM look.
The subwoofer is a Rockford Fosgate P2D2-8 eight inch DVC unit mounted in a custom ported fibreglass enclosure mounted on the left hand side of the rear luggage area.
The amp is a Rockford Fosgate T400X4 four channel unit.
It is a nice basic install that turned out brilliantly.

This install was something different.
The vehicle was a Unimog double cab truck converted to the ultimate offroad R.V.
The customer wanted a system that is loud and clear while not taking up space allocated to the safari fridges that mount behind the drivers seat.
The structural constraints on the doors were not condusive to optimal speaker placement.
So I took to the sky.
A new overhead console was designed using CAD and was fabricated out of 2mm steel.
Pods for the rear speakers were also CAD designed. All the steel components were powder coated and liberally treated to Silent Coat 2mm Deadener before being bolted in place.
The subwoofer enclosure and amplifier were mounted on an MDF base that closes off the rear windows.
The source unit is the existing Alpine bluetooth single DIN head unit.
Driving the Rockford Fosgate Power T1675 speakers and Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD2-10 shallow subwoofer is a Rockford Fosgate T1000X5ad amplifier.
The subwoofer is mounted in a slot ported enclosure and the mouth of the port is situated above the amplifier to allow for forced cooling of the amp.
All wiring and cabling is Rockford Fosgate.
The installation was done as part of a major refurbishing exercise of the vehicle's interiorm

This week I did this build on a new GD6 Land Cruiser single cab.
I treated the car to a full Silent Coat damping treatment.
I had the seats, door cards an roof liner re-trimmed in black leather and eccoleather.
We changed the headlights to projector type LED lights and smoked the tail light lenses.
For the sound upgrade, I fitted a Sony XAV AX4050 head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
I used a Rockford Fosgate Prime four channel amplifier to power the RF Punch P1675-S splits and RF Prime R2SD2-10 shallow subwoofer. The steering wheel was fitted with sattelite controls for the radio as well as cruise control.
As a cherry on top, I fitted a leather trimmed gearhift k**b trimmed with red stitching to match the seats and door cards.

Today I upgraded the steering wheel and gearshift k**bs for a customer in his 79 Land Cruiser.
The customer specified black leather with red stitching for the steering wheel and gearshift k**bs.
We chose a carbon finish for the radio sattelite buttons on the steering wheel.
I also did a colour change on the steering column covers to match the black leather of the steering wheel.

What a nice start to the new year.
Today I did a sound upgrade for a customer in his 79 Land Cruiser.
Rockford Fosgate Prime 5 channel amplifier.
Rockford Fosgate Punch 6,75 inch splits in the front doors and 6,75 inch co-axials in the rear doors.
Bass is taken care of by a Rockford Fosgate Prime shallow 10 inch subwoofer in a ported enclosure.
The roof and doors were treated to Silent Coat sound damping.
Comfort was taken care of by fitting a leather trimmed original steering wheel with sattelite controls for the radio and OEM cruise control stalk.
The shift k**bs of both the main and 4x4 levers were also replaced with leather trimmed units.
Reversing is made easier by the installation of a flush-mounted reverse camera in the rear bumper.
As a final touch the drivers door window operation was modified to include auto close to supplement the factory auto open function.
For the benefit of the rear seat occupants, cupholders with integrated USB A and C connections were fitted on either side of the rear seat.
