Norman Motsepe worked in haircare since the 1980s, ran salons, and became a top stylist in Africa. He left the industry for a while, but his son Agobokwe convinced him to start again. In 2017 they launched Essence Hair Care, making hair products for salons. When Covid-19 lockdowns closed salons in 2020, business stopped.

To keep going, Norman and his wife sold their house to fund the company. They switched to selling in cosmetic shops and online. Agobokwe joined full-time and they worked shifts with little money. It was tough, with late payments and losses, but selling the house gave them cash to survive.

They knocked on Shoprite’s doors for 2 years to prove themselves. In 2024 Shoprite listed their products in 20 Gauteng supermarkets. Now Essence has 22 products in 300 cosmetic shops nationwide, sales grew over 130%, and they employ 22 people. They just moved into a bigger factory in Centurion. Norman handles sales, Agobokwe runs production, and his wife helps too. They say their strong family bond is why the business worked.
