Alternator failure rarely happens suddenly โ it progresses in stages. And at each stage, your vehicle gives you clues if you know what to look for.
Stage 1. Undercharging begins.
Output drops below system needs. The battery compensates quietly. Vehicle runs normally, but charging voltage reads under 13.8V.
Stage 2. Battery drains.
Charge depletes over time. Cold starts slow down, warning light flickers. Some drivers replace the battery, but the issue returns.
Stage 3. Electronics misbehave.
Voltage irregularities cause flickering lights, radio resets, random warning lights. Even gearboxes may enter protection mode.
Stage 4. Cutโout or no start.
Battery canโt cope. The car stalls while driving or wonโt crank at all.
๐ Stages 1 & 2 = time to diagnose.
๐ Stages 3 & 4 = urgent repair.
