Japan just beamed solar electricity from space to Earth. The clouds can never block solar power again. πΈβοΈπ―π΅
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency completed the world's first successful demonstration of space-based solar power transmission β wirelessly beaming a small but confirmed quantity of electricity from a satellite in orbit down to a receiver on Earth's surface. The amount of power transmitted was modest; the significance is enormous. Every technology barrier that made space-based solar a science fiction concept rather than an engineering roadmap just got reclassified as a known, solvable problem with a working proof of concept behind it.
The physics motivation for space-based solar is compelling. In orbit, solar panels receive sunlight 24 hours a day with no atmospheric absorption β the same panel that generates 20 percent efficiency on the ground works continuously at full rated output above the clouds, in the dark of night that is only dark on Earth's surface. A solar satellite generates 8 to 10 times more energy per panel per day than an equivalent ground installation. And it generates power regardless of weather, season, or latitude β the solar farm that can serve Antarctica in winter and the Sahara through a dust storm.
The technology challenges remaining are significant but defined: launching enormous lightweight panel arrays affordably, maintaining their orientation with precision, and converting and transmitting microwave energy with high enough efficiency to make the economics work. Japan, the European Space Agency, China, and several private companies are all actively working on the engineering solutions. Space-based solar is no longer a question of whether the physics allows it. It is a question of when the engineering delivers it.
