Would you know where to position your car for a right turn here? During this mock driving test, the student becomes confused about where to turn, with the KEEP LEFT signs adding to his uncertainty.

A KEEP LEFT sign can seem confusing when you’ve been asked to turn right. The important distinction is that it tells you which side of the traffic island or obstruction to pass. It doesn’t mean you must turn left at the intersection.

Read the signs alongside the road markings and the shape of the intersection. Identify the correct approach to the right turn, then look for the lane or part of the road you need to enter. Avoid focusing on one sign so much that you lose track of the overall layout.

Approach at a controlled speed that gives you time to observe and plan. If an examiner’s instruction is unclear, ask for clarification early rather than making a sudden move.

Driving through tight spaces requires careful speed control and safe clearance from parked cars. In this mock driving test, the student drives too fast and too close to the parked vehicles. I have to intervene to keep the situation safe, resulting in an immediate fail.

When the available space becomes narrower, adjust your speed before entering the gap. A slower, controlled approach gives you more time to judge clearance, steer accurately and respond if something changes.

Look ahead and assess whether there’s enough room to pass safely. Consider the parked cars, any approaching traffic and the possibility of a door opening or someone stepping out. If there isn’t enough space, wait rather than trying to squeeze through.

Speed and clearance need to be considered together. Don’t assume that a gap is safe simply because your car can physically fit through it. Give yourself enough space and time to pass without putting yourself or others at risk.

What is a staggered intersection, and why can it confuse learner drivers? In this video, the student misreads the road layout and ends up on the wrong side of the road during a mock driving test.

A staggered intersection has two side roads that meet a main road at different points rather than directly opposite each other. This creates two nearby T-intersections. Getting to the road across from you may involve a short left turn followed by a right turn, or a right turn followed by a left turn, depending on the layout.

Because the roads don’t line up, it’s important to plan your path instead of treating the intersection like a straight crossing. Look ahead, identify the road you’re entering, and make sure your intended path leads to the left side of that road. Avoid cutting diagonally across towards the wrong side.

Approach at a controlled speed that gives you time to understand the layout. Check the signs and road markings, observe traffic, and assess each part of the manoeuvre before proceeding. If you need to wait between turns, maintain the correct road position while finding a safe opportunity to continue.

Do you need to indicate left when going straight through a roundabout? This video explains when to use your indicator so other road users can understand where you’re going.

When going straight ahead, you don’t need to indicate on approach. As you leave the roundabout, indicate left.

Generally, start your left signal after passing the exit immediately before the one you intend to take. Signalling too early could suggest you’re taking an earlier exit.
On a very small roundabout, there may be limited opportunity to signal left before exiting.

The key is to understand the correct sequence and signal your exit wherever practicable, while maintaining safe control of the car.

Remember to cancel your indicator after leaving so you don’t confuse other drivers. Practising the timing helps make this part of your driving feel natural, especially when preparing for a driving test.

What’s the speed limit when there are no signs? On the built-up residential road shown in this video, the default speed limit is 50 km/h. Luke exceeds that limit during his mock driving test, and I have to intervene. His speeding results in a fail.

The absence of a speed sign doesn’t mean you can choose any speed or simply follow the car ahead. You need to recognise when a default limit applies and keep track of signs you’ve already passed. A previously posted limit doesn’t disappear just because there isn’t another sign nearby.

The 50 km/h default discussed here applies to built-up areas, rather than every road without signs. Different default limits can apply outside built-up areas, and rules vary by location.

Remember that 50 is the maximum in this situation. Parked cars, narrow streets, pedestrians or limited visibility may require a lower speed. Check your speed briefly and regularly while keeping your attention mainly on the road, and adjust early rather than waiting for the examiner to intervene.

What should you do when you’re in the left lane and see a FORM 1 LANE sign? In the situation shown in this video, you need to prepare to move right as the two lanes become one. Missing the right indicator earns the driver a minor mark during the mock driving test.

Before moving sideways, check your rear-view and right mirrors, indicate right, and do a shoulder check to the right. When it’s safe, gradually move towards the centre of the single lane.

The timing matters too. Complete your checks and signal before you start moving across, giving other road users advance warning of your intended movement. Your shoulder check helps you identify a vehicle that may be alongside you in your blind spot.
Look ahead for the FORM 1 LANE sign and changes in the road markings so you have time to prepare. Keep your speed controlled, assess the surrounding traffic and avoid leaving your observations or indicator until the last moment.
