Good to be back in the seat recently. A few weeks ago McLaren’s autocross, then Irwin’s last weekend and today an OSCC autocross up at Clark’s Junction.

With life being busy still finishing off the house and about to pop out another baby, grass autocrosses are the perfect family friendly low stress easy events for me to do for the next wee while.

McLarens was knocking some rust off. Reminding me some of the important parts of driving and setup Id forgotten, like not parking in a gully! Managed to sort that out with some nice dry conditions in Southland at Irwin’s, being first car home (sorry cross cars, on those tyres you don’t count!), and today at Clark’s junction managed to back that up with another win.

With grass being the focus I’ve done some changes to the car, downsized the brakes to fit smaller wheels and better grass orientated tyres and it’s made a huge difference today with slippery surface balance and grip much improved. Significantly better overall grip than when on. Low profile 17’s!

Bring on some more events

Been a while since a post on here. Thought Id give an update of the state of the nation.

Mirage is currently a garage queen, just waiting on me to have more time and funds to use it. Its all operational so will be very easy to get it back racing when that time comes. Looking forwards to it.

Building consent is issued on our project, so hopefully within 6 months my workshop space will expand from being a 10m2 single garage to a slightly healthier 135m2 garage attached to our new house, where I can have a better set up and be a lot more productive. At the moment even the smallest job seems to take a long time.

I'm generally doing L*D rebuilds on mainly the 32v Nissan couplings at the moment, Ill look to get back to the Evo 123 couplings once I have my new workshop. I'm just keeping things streamlined currently.

I'm working on rebuilding my Speeduino data files after they were lost, which means I can continue development on the ECU side of things. I'm currently working on the design for an Evo 4-6 style ECU with the 4-plug connector. This will also work on the Early evo vehicles too. The next step after that will be rebuilding the data files for the SR20 ECU. This is a good thing to keep me busy during downtime at work. I'm still producing the SR20 ECU from existing stock in the mean time.

It has been 2 years since the last mirage outing. Awesome to be back in the seat, although a little out of practice! Car ran great, what a relief. Happy to settle with 2nd place today. I think a bit more seat time and definitely a fresh set of rubber would have very much improved the times but the objective was to just have a day out in the car which was mission successful.

First event for the Mirage in over 2 years! Wow. Great to have the niggles sorted with oil leaks from various places and it ran like clockwork all day. I cer...

This one came up real nice.

RS5F32V gearbox to suit a GTI pulsar, nice short 4.4 final drive combined with the N15 GTI gears it makes a nice lively gearbox with a reasonable cruising 5th.

This was assembled with one of my upgraded Viscous L*D couplings so its ready for some spirited driving. It came to me in pretty dire shape, with a number of critical components missing, but its got a new lease of life now after a rebuild.

These can be rebuilt with a number of little upgrades internally to help with shifting and performance. The best stock ratios for a competition car are the N14 GTI gears combined with an aftermarket final drive, but the 4.4 VZR final drive makes a good upgrade at a budget friendly cost.

Good to see (and hear) Hayden's p11 making some healthy numbers. Recently tuned on a reasonably stock sr20ve, running one of my plug-in speeduino based ecus for the 64 pin type sr20 platforms

1 down, 4 to go. Rebuilt Viscous Limited slip diff couplings for the Nissan Pulsar/Primera RS5F32V gearbox.

I've been rebuilding these and improving their strength with more suitable fluid for spirited driving. Dismantling them, removing residual fluid, modifying to allow filling, and reassembling with fresh new fluid. These were never intended to be a serviceable unit, and are completely sealed from factory.

They approximately double in their strength with this procedure. Plenty of lock to arrest a car from doing single spinners, or lighting up an inside wheel.

Also, at $350, they are about 1/5th the cost of a Cusco plated diff and generally more suitable for street vehicles as they still retain the silent and smooth operation.

I can also do centre diff couplings for the Early Evo 1-3 W5M33 gearboxes.

Last little workshop job before it starts to get all packed up. I didn't have time to do the whole manifold so guided my mate through doing all the pipe work, then he came up and I tigged it up. Came out real good. For fitting a Evo td05hr onto a Mazda BP 1800 engine. Should go good in a little circuit spec MX5.

With the move coming up the house is now officially live, on the market. If you're in the Hawkes Bay bay and know someone needing a finished house with good shed, let them know about this one

🏠 Residential 🛌 3 bedrooms 🛋 1 living room 🛁 1 bathroom 🚘 4 car parks

Must be about as clean as I've ever had the shed.
