President Donald Trump could appear on a proposed new $250 bill, potentially becoming the first living person featured on U.S. paper currency in more than 150 years.
The proposal is being discussed as part of the nation’s 250th Independence anniversary celebrations in 2026 and would require congressional approval, as current federal law generally prohibits living individuals from appearing on U.S. currency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that discussions are underway and said preliminary planning has already begun should lawmakers authorize the measure.
Defending the proposal, Bessent argued that commemorating a sitting president on a special anniversary banknote would be appropriate, stating, “I don’t think that there’s anything untoward about having the President of the United States on the 250th anniversary bill.”
The idea has quickly become a subject of political debate. Supporters view it as a historic tribute tied to a landmark national celebration, while critics contend it would further personalize government institutions and elevate the president’s public image.
Any such change would face scrutiny in Congress and would likely spark broader discussion about the role of political figures on national symbols and currency.
