People ask what's beyond Hoi An. Here's where we actually take them.

Da Nang, for the Lady Buddha looking out over the sea. The temples up in the hills that never make the guidebooks. Hue and its royal tombs, lit gold after dark. Marble Mountains on the way back. And when you've got a few days, the sleeper train north, a bunk, a window, and green rolling past.

Some days the whole plan is: get out of town, find water, make fire.

A couple of hours into the hills there's a lake most maps forget. We ride out, build a fire on the bank, throw pork and eggplant on a grill that's really just a rack over coals, and eat with the water in front of us.

No restaurant. No menu. Nobody else around.

Breakfast on our trips isn't a hotel buffet. It's bò né, beef and a fried egg still spitting in a cast-iron skillet, at the roadside spot Quang has gone to for years.
Pâté, a warm baguette to mop it all up, a plate of herbs, and a bowl of chilies you'll learn to respect. It costs less than the coffee you'd get back home.

We never had a word for it. We just called it going with Quang.

Hue is an two and a half hour drive from the homestay. Old imperial capital, incense in the air, and a lunch stop that beats anything in a guidebook.

We run it as a full day. The tombs, citadel and the place Quang actually eats when he isn't working.

He's driven this road for years. You get the version with no queue and no set menu.

Keep driving west out of Hoi An. The paddies give way to mountains, and after a while the road just stops.

That's Co Tu country. A stilt house in the middle of the village, rivers clear enough to count the stones on the bottom, and a lunch you catch yourself before anyone lights the fire.

Quang drives it. He knows which turnoff to take, which is the only reason we can go at all.

No tour bus makes this trip. That's the point.

Welcome to Wild Trails.
