Introducing Ba Na Hill Station

Ba Na Hill is located about two hours from Da Nang, the largest city in central Vietnam. Home to French resort built in the 1920s, the Ba Na hill station or hill resort used to be a playground for French tourists, who would come to enjoy the over two hundred villas, clubs, and restaurants located there. Today, Ba Na’s hill resort is still a popular spot four tourists, but the roads have gotten quite rough and it’s not the opulent spot it once was.

Ba Na Mountain is about 45km to the west of Da Nang, and there is winding road to the 1,487m summit. The mountain area is estimated to host 136 families, 379 genuses and over 453 species of flora, including 251 medicinal species. It is also home to 266 vertebrates, 61 species of mammals, 178 species of birds, and 17 species of reptiles. The total area of Ba Na Mountain is 8,425ha, including 6,056ha of natural forest. Ba Na is located almost 1,500 metres above sea level, giving it an excellent view of the VietNam Sea and surrounding mountains. Its elevation also makes it significantly cooler than the nearby coast; it’s not unusual to experience a ten to fifteen degree Celsius drop when climbing up the mountain.
The Colonial Era and the Communist Era

The villas that the French erected are mostly gone today. A few ruins remain, which tourists find interesting to visit, but most of them have completely disappeared. It’s no wonder that the Vietnamese would be eager to erase the colonialist past; even up until World War II, wealthy French villa owners would be carried by their poorer Vietnamese servants the last 20 km up the mountain road in a sedan chair.

These days, the local government hopes to bring tourists back to Ba Na – including foreign tourists, but also making it more accessible to local tourists. The mix of foreign traffic and local traffic up to the top of Ba Na hill station has led to an eclectic combination of some western-style hotels and restaurants, but also plenty of karaoke bars.
Pagoda and Cable Car

At the top of the mountain is the Linh Ung Pagoda, a gorgeous Buddhist temple that provides visitors a chance for peaceful reflection. The centrepiece of the pagoda is the 24 metre white Buddha, which is visible from miles away.

Not far from the pagoda is a cable car – but it’s not just any cable car. As of 25 March 2009, the cable car running in the Ba Na Hills was recognized by Guinness World Records as being both the highest non-stop cable car and the longest non-stop cable car. As long as you don’t mind heights, the cable car provides a great way not only to get to the top of the Ba Na hill station, but also gives its riders awe-inspiring views of the surrounding forests and mountains. The record-breaking cable car runs from the base of Ba Na Mountain to Vong Nguyet Mountain’s peak.

Linh Ung Pagoda, Son Tra Peninsula

Linh Ung Pagoda is located in an area locally called Bai But (Buddha’s Sanctuary) on Son Tra Peninsula. It is rated as the most magnificent work of this kind in the city of Da Nang in Central Viet Nam, in terms of architectural and artistic value.

Built on a site of 12 hectares on the Son Tra Peninsula, the Lin Ung, Son Tra Pagoda is the largest in Da Nang in terms of scale and artistic architecture. The pagoda is famous for its beautiful 67-metre-tall Goddess of Mercy statue standing on a lotus-shaped platform.A large courtyard containing many statues leads visitors to a giant three-door gate. From here visitors can relax their minds, by gazing across the boundless sea below with numerous boats bobbing on the water and to the Marble Mountains in the distance, or cast off all their worries by looking at the gentle face of the Goddess of Mercy statue to the right. Locals believe that this Goddess of Mercy statue, which faces the sea, will take care of fishermen and give them the strength to deal with any storms and high waves.

From any corner of Da Nang, visitors can easily capture the sight of the Guanyan statue placed by the pagoda. She looks to the sea, with her back leaning against the mountain side. One of her hands is set in a mudra gesture and the other hand holds a small water jar (Buddhist sa.amrta).

From the pagoda, visitors can enjoy seeing a panoramic view of the beautiful city of Da Nang, a young, dynamic economic hub in the central region, or to another direction, My Khe Beach with an immense blue sea and white sand stretching along the road at the foot of Son Tra Peninsula.

Along the two sides of the path leading to the main chamber are statues of 18 Arhats, each describing different human beings’ emotions – joyous, angry, happy and sad, and each being sculptured so skillfully. Inside the pagoda’s main chamber, statues of Buddha Sakyamuri, Guanyin and Tripittaka are displayed. All make the scene so attractive and lively.

The main shrine is built in a great harmony of modern and traditional architecture, typical of a Vietnamese pagoda, including firm pillars with meticulously carved dragons.

Other categories, including the main chamber, the ancestors’ house, and the statue garden of Arhats, all were built and arranged magnificently.

The 17-layer tower inside the statue of Buddha Guanyin is a “must” stop for any visitor who wants to explore its uniqueness. The statue is said to be the biggest one in Viet Nam to date at 67m in height and 35m in diameter of its base, which is a high as a 30-storey building. From the top of the tower, visitors will see the whole city of Da Nang, forests, islands and the sea of Son Tra Peninsula.

On top of Guayin’s hat, there is a 2m-high statue of Buddha, and in each layer of the tower there are 21 smaller Buddhist statues placed in different gestures and positions.

Located in a newly established tourist complex on Son Tra Peninsula, Linh Ung Pagoda is not only a religious site, but also a spiritual tourist attraction to visitors who visit the coastal city of Da Nang.

Museum of Cham Sculpture DaNang
The Museum’s first building was opened in 1919, but many Cham sculptures collected in Da Nang, Quang Nam and elsewhere were brought to the site over the preceding twenty years. The collection was begun by French archaelogists and experts from L’École Francaise d’Extrême Orient (EFEO). Some artefacts were sent to Paris and others to the Ha Noi and Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City) museums, but many typical objects were left in Tourane (now Da Nang).
The Museum of Cham Sculpture is at the junction of Bach Dang Street and Tran Phu Street, Hai Chau District, near the Dragon Bridge. It is a graceful building and an eclectic mix of French-colonial architecture and Cham elements set in picturesque surroundings by the Han river.

The history of the museum starts in 1891 when Charles Lemire started to collect Cham sculptures that had been discovered in scattered areas of Quang Nam Province and brought them to Da Nang. The number of items increased to 90 by 1895 and they were housed at the “Tourane Garden”, where the museum would later be built.
