How Cold Weather Affects Your Vehicle – And What You Can Do About It
When temperatures drop, your vehicle feels it too! Cold weather can cause a range of issues, from slow starts to reduced performance. Here are some common cold-weather impacts on your car and tips to prevent them:
🚗 1. Battery Problems
Cold weather slows the chemical reactions inside your battery, making it harder for your engine to start. If your battery is over three years old, get it tested.
Tip: Park in a garage when possible and carry jumper cables.
❄️ 2. Thickened Fluids
Oil, transmission fluid, and antifreeze thicken in cold temperatures, which can strain your engine.
Tip: Use winter-grade oil recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
🛞 3. Tire Pressure Drops
For every 10°F drop in temperature, your tire pressure can decrease by about 1 PSI, reducing traction.
Tip: Check tire pressure regularly and maintain proper levels.
💧 4. Frozen Wiper Fluid and Wipers
Freezing temps can cause washer fluid to ice up and wipers to stick to the windshield.
Tip: Use winter-rated washer fluid and lift your wipers if freezing rain or snow is expected.
⛽ 5. Thickening Fuel Lines
In extremely cold weather, condensation can freeze in your fuel lines, especially if your tank is low.
Tip: Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent freezing.
💡 Pro Tip: Don’t let your car idle for too long to “warm up” – modern engines warm up faster when driving gently.
