Tongue Pressure as a Predictor of Tongue Base Collapse in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome - PMC

New research suggests that reduced tongue strength may contribute to airway collapse in people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI), researchers found that patients with weaker tongue pressure were significantly more likely to experience tongue base and epiglottic collapse during sleep endoscopy. The findings suggest that simple, non-invasive tongue-strength testing could help identify patients with tongue-related airway obstruction and guide more targeted treatment.
