Delahaye 175s Dubonnet front suspension main shafts. Originally separated from their arms for various repairs, these parts were LOST IN SHIPPING!

What you see here are new shafts created from extensive notes prior to repairs, photographs, & working with the remaining parts.

First, an engineering drawing was created of the part. Next was to prototype the part on the 3D printer and check its fit in the housing, etc. Once all details could be confirmed, the parts went to production.

Now back together with their arms, welded together from the back per original assembly, painted, and assembled back into the housings.

A great example of why your disassembly notes & photos are so important.

Can a candle have three ends?

What problems can I solve today?
What are the limits of my capability?
How can I further my skills and enrich my mind?

The ceaseless turning of the cogs, working to unlock the mysteries of the universe.

Been rather delinquent in my social media posting, so I figured it was time to share a few SS-100 photos.

All work being undertaken on this project is with an eye towards preservation. After getting the engine removed, inspected, all pertinent particulars collected, and disassembled, it was time for a good cleaning. Normal engine block cleaning methods will all remove the paint, so this was entirely cleaned by hand.

All water passages were physically cleaned with rods, picks, vacuuming, etc through all available openings. Four full dustpans of material were removed. This was followed by two rounds of chemical cleaning and flushing.

The exterior and interior were throughly cleaned with brushes, plastic scrapers, etc. The toothbrush was one of my most trusty companions here. All oil passages cleared and cleaned. One oil passage was actually found to be incomplete from the factory, so that was taken care of too.

Make it all the way to then end to see the result!

To say this has been a long time coming, would be an understatement. These new Simplex 50hp (short stroke) cylinder block castings are the representation of a tremendous amount of work and effort by all involved. This included a draft pair, that needed some design rework.

Working from original parts, one good, one cracked, the reproductions produced are remarkably accurate. The broken part was sectioned as shown, to fully understand the internal shapes. After thorough inspection, measurement, etc here at the shop, they are off to machine.

Our next specimen is this remarkably original 1936 SS-100 “Jaguar”. In for full mechanical restoration and sorting. To say that I have my work cut out for me here would be an understatement.

Pulled from a barn in the south of France sometime around 1960, as part of a deal for a different car, this car has sat nearly untouched for over 65 years. Never started or driven in that time. True time capsule

One of these hydraulic valve assemblies was missing its lightest check valve spring. Containing two or three valve circuits each, these assemblies rely on calibrated spring pressure for the valves preform as designed.

Hand wound from 28 gauge (.0126”) phosphorous bronze wire. This spring was wound in the lathe around a mandrel made here, with plenty of trial & error. Lots of effort for one spring, but an item like simply is not to be found for purchase. Can you tell me which one is which?

If you are like me, a complete set of metric jet drills is a toolbox necessity. Used for carburetor tuning and hydraulic valve calibration.

There simply was no viable set available for purchase that don’t start skipping sizes, come in a crappy vinyl pouch, or some other BS. So I made my own.

3D printed in heavy wall ABS, they will be durable enough to throw in your bag when heading to the track. Including 42 sizes .4 - 2.45mm x .05.

$125 + $9.80 shipping.

Perfectly flat, parallel hardened washers fresh off the surface grinder. Precision washers & spacers facilitate many of the repairs here. Surface grinding is the only way to get reliably parallel surfaces on a part like this. For 175s suspension.

Good help is hard to find. Luckily, Snoopy is helping me with quality checks in the new prototyping department here at the shop. The goal is to be able to replicate broken castings, and design other individual parts for projects as needed.
