During a collision repair, you may see parts removed from your vehicle that weren’t actually damaged in the accident.

That doesn’t necessarily mean those parts are being replaced.

Sometimes components have to be removed simply to 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐫, 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡, 𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚.

For example:

🔧 Trim, moldings & handles may need to be removed for refinishing
🚪 Interior trim may need to come off to access panels or components
💡 Lamps or other nearby parts may need to be removed for repair access
🎨 Adjacent components may be removed so the repaired area can be properly prepped and refinished
🔍 Parts may also need to come off so technicians can inspect what’s underneath

In collision repair, there’s often a lot more involved than repairing the part you can see from the outside.

Sometimes collision damage doesn’t tell the whole story until the vehicle is disassembled.

Once damaged parts are removed, technicians may find additional damage that wasn’t visible during the initial inspection.

🛠️ Repairs that can only be confirmed after teardown

When that happens, a 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 may be written to document the additional damage and update the repair plan.

It doesn’t necessarily mean something was “missed” during the initial estimate — sometimes the damage simply couldn’t be seen until the vehicle was taken apart.

It’s a question we hear often, so let’s break it down.

Your deductible is the portion of a covered claim 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲. It’s part of your policy — it isn’t a fee charged or determined by the body shop.

When the insurance payment is based on the documented cost of the repair, your deductible makes up the remaining portion of that repair bill. Simply removing it without a legitimate change to the repair cost can create billing and insurance issues.

There are circumstances where the amount you owe may legitimately change — such as when your insurance company waives the deductible under your policy, another responsible party pays it, or the final repair cost changes.

🔧 FROM THE SHOP

There’s a lot more to collision repair than what you see on the outside. 👀

This vehicle came to us with significant damage along the passenger side, including the rear door and quarter panel area.

In the second photo, you can see what the repair looks like once the damaged exterior panels are removed. ➡️

Behind those finished exterior panels is the vehicle’s inner structure — and when a repair involves this area, the process becomes much more involved than simply replacing a damaged panel.

🔩 Damaged components have to be carefully removed
📏 The underlying structure must be inspected and addressed
📋 Manufacturer repair procedures help guide the repair process
🛠️ Replacement panels must be properly fitted and installed
🎨 Then comes refinishing, reassembly and final quality checks

The first photo shows the damage. The second shows just how much work can be hiding behind it.

It’s a side of collision repair most vehicle owners never get to see — but it’s where a lot of the work happens. ✨
