Every year, a cohort of servant leaders commits to serving 250 youth in UPW’s free summer camps. Post 2020, intern recruitment shifted dramatically, dropping from 25 to 3, with slow progress toward rebuilding.

The Lord blessed our recruitment efforts this year, bringing 12 summer interns to Wilmington! Together, they work with and lead youth, live in staff housing, drive to and from camp, attend church, participate in small groups, and take fun adventures. They experience conflict and reconciliation with one another. They experience tough and joyful situations with youth. Each encounter forms the crucible of transformative relationships in which interns experience the power of grace, the beauty of sacrifice, and the satisfaction of well-earned rest.

UPW intern, Cameron, expresses that “he struggled a lot” coming into the summer. Meeting new people and doing skits in front of strangers is difficult. “I started getting to know the campers,” he recalls and, “by the end of the first week I loved a lot of the campers, and built relationships with them.”

When asked what helps him persevere Cameron responded immediately, “Relationships with the campers,” and “having my director and other interns to lean back on…I can fall back on the community.”

Please pray for our interns, as they finish the summer. Pray that they will be continually strengthened in Christ to serve and love children and one another.

📣 IMPORTANT NOTE! 📣 Internship opportunities don’t end with the summer. School-year interns serve from September to May, and are a critical part of after-school programs. If you know someone who is passionate about serving children, living in community, and sharing the love of Christ, let’s connect! We are SO thankful for the community that makes summer camp possible through supply donations!

Last week we had 2 extremely hot days and were able to pass out freeze pops to make the afternoon easier.

As more hot days are a head, we’re asking if you would help make it better.

Freeze pops can be dropped off at our main office or shipped to us.

🛶 We Need You To Paddle! 🛶
Raise $120,000 to Employ 34 StreetLeaders!
Saturday, June 6th, 2026

“That summer camp job was my first taste of purpose and joy in serving. Through the StreetLeader program, I found community.”
- Giovanni Paredes, UrbanPromise Wilmington Board Member, Former StreetLeader and UrbanPromise Academy Alumnus

When you participate in the Paddle for Promise, you impact dozens of teens. Paid employment and a safe place to work where they have fun, and make friends is theirs for the summer when you raise $1,000. As Giovanni stated above, you give teens joy, purpose, and community.

That’s why we’re asking you to hit the Christina River on June 6th!

UrbanPromise Wilmington’s Executive Council member, Josh Gregor, is the Director of the StreetLeader Program. He is passionate about the relationships, discipleship, and training we offer to teens in Wilmington. His personal invitation to Paddle is above.

So will you set up your fundraising page today and join us?

“I didn’t want to go to college” Dante reflects “but seeing all the colleges” he realizes “I could succeed more getting a bachelor’s degree.” Tuskegee University “made the trip pop,” he remembers, “being there witnessing everyone get along, I want to be part of that too.”
Andre, a college trip veteran, believes his first trip “expanded his brain”, but this time “he wants to see what is out there” for him. At Ole Miss, he finds “community” and an impressive football stadium. At Morehouse College, he sees “boys wearing suits, holding doors, turning into gentlemen” like a “brotherhood.”
For Andre and Dante, visiting each school means experiencing a world that they can see themselves uniquely fit for, but the trip also nurtures them in more personal ways.
